Genome segment ratios change during whitefly transmission of two bipartite cassava mosaic begomoviruses

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Cassava mosaic disease is caused by a complex of whitefly-transmitted begomoviruses, which often occur in co-infections. These viruses have bipartite genomes consisting of DNA-A and DNA-B that are encapsidated into separate virions.

The cassava mosaic geminiviruses occurring in Uganda following the 1990s epidemic of severe cassava mosaic disease

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, 2004
SummaryThe cassava mosaic geminiviruses (CMGs) isolated from cassava plants expressing mild and severe symptoms of cassava mosaic disease (CMD) in 2002 in Uganda were investigated using the polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP) molecular techniques and DNA sequencing.

Bioassays of a Cordyceps sp. Isolate as a Candidate Mycoinsecticide Against Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 Adults

open access: yesEntomological Research, Volume 55, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT The whitefly Bemisia tabaci MEAM1 (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) is a major agricultural pest that infests a wide range of crops and transmits several plant viruses, leading to significant yield losses worldwide. The intensive use of chemical insecticides for its control has contributed to the development of resistance, highlighting the ...

Response of Local Cassava Varieties in Uganda to Cassava Mosaic Virus Disease

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Experimental Agriculture, 2012
Cassava mosaic disease (CMD) resistant varieties have been used to manage CMD in Uganda. In spite the availability of a number of CMD resistant cultivars, several local landraces are continually grown in Uganda because they possess certain desirable traits, which may not have been fully met by the resistant varieties.

Virus‐Inducible Activation of Hypersensitive Response Confers Broad‐Spectrum Resistance to Diverse Viruses in Plants

open access: yesMolecular Plant Pathology, Volume 26, Issue 12, December 2025.
Using a virus‐inducible promoter to drive the expression of the Avr4/Cf‐4 gene pair can trigger a hypersensitive response upon viral infection, which confers plants broad‐spectrum resistance to geminiviruses. ABSTRACT The hypersensitive response (HR) is a powerful plant defence mechanism that restricts pathogen spread through localised cell death ...

Gradual Emergence of East African cassava mosaic Cameroon virus in Cassava Farms in Côte d’Ivoire

open access: yesAgronomy
Cassava mosaic disease (CMD) and cassava brown streak disease (CBSD) are endemic threats to cassava production, causing significant yield losses. They are caused respectively by begomoviruses and ipomoviruses that are transmitted by whiteflies and ...

Disease resistance characterisation of improved cassava genotypes to cassava mosaic disease at different ecozones

open access: yesArchives of Phytopathology and Plant Protection, 2015
Twenty-two cassava genotypes and eight controls were evaluated in two cropping seasons for resistance to cassava mosaic disease (CMD) at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) fields, located at different ecozones of Nigeria. Disease incidence (DI) and index of symptom severity data were obtained monthly at each location and ...

A TIR‐NLR gene from Arabidopsis Pla‐1 confers resistance to geminivirus infection

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 124, Issue 5, December 2025.
SUMMARY Geminiviruses are single‐stranded DNA viruses that infect many plant species and cause serious losses in agronomically important crops. An earlier study showed that the Arabidopsis thaliana ecotype Pla‐1 is resistant to infection by diverse geminivirus species and mapped the major resistance locus Geminivirus Resistance of Pla‐1 1 (GRP1) to ...

Distinct Begomoviruses Closely Related to Cassava Mosaic Viruses Cause Indian Jatropha Mosaic Disease

open access: yesInternational Journal of Virology, 2006
A begomovirus was recently shown to be causing Jatropha mosaic disease (JMD) on Jatropha for the first time in India. A typical begomovirus-like symptoms characterized by chlorotic specks on leaves, curling and malformation of leaves, severe reduction in leaf size, partial or complete sterility were seen on infected plants.
