Influence of rare earths metals (REM) on the structure and selected properties of grey cast iron

open access: yesMetalurgija, 2020
The paper presents the results of tests carried out on grey cast iron obtained in laboratory conditions. Cast iron EN-GJL-200 was enriched with REM at 0,3 % wt. in relation to the weight of the charge metal.

Cast iron promises

open access: yesJournal of Innovation in Health Informatics, 2007
During the Victorian era, a fiercely competitive industry emerged to build and operate Britain's railways. Many of the design and construction skills required were still fairly rudimentary, and were typically developed through practical experience.

Fluorophobic Effect Enables Selective Detection of PFAS in Water with Electrolyte‐Gated Organic Transistors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
PerFluoroAlkyl Substances (PFAS) are responsible of major and persistent environmental pollution worldwide. This work demonstrates an ultra‐sensitive sensor for PFAS based on an organic transistor whose gate is functionalized with a binary self‐assembled monolayer containing a perfluorinated molecule.

Calcium Imparts Advanced Functionalities to Silk Hydrogels for Biofabrication and Biomedical Innovation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The addition of calcium ions to silk fibroin enhances the hydrogel properties and, when combined with visible light crosslinking, enables compatibility with advanced light‐based fabrication techniques. Calcium ions extend the shelf‐life of silk and facilitate the fabrication of multizonal, multilayered constructs for advanced stimuli‐responsive ...

Effect of compositional changes and heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of gray cast iron

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Cast iron is used in machine tools to cast various components because of its wear resistance and vibration-damping ability. However, the relationship between its microstructure and damping capacity has not been studied.

High‐Concentration Mesogen‐Assisted Exfoliation of Low‐Dimensional Nanomaterials for Achieving Ultralow‐Temperature Actuations of Liquid Crystal Elastomers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Most matter is nominally frozen in the polar regions or space, and liquid crystal materials are no exception. Consequently, soft actuators, including liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), are inoperative under such extreme cold in response to stimuli, as their motion relies on mechanical deformation.

Exploiting the Functionality of Cerium Oxide‐Modified Carbon Nanohorns Catalysts Toward Enhanced CO2 Reduction Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A cerium oxide‐carbon nanohybrid catalyst is synthesized via two distinct routes and is integrated into H‐type cells and gas diffusion layers (GDLs) to enhance electrochemical performance. Structural variations significantly affect performance, with the solvothermal sample exhibiting higher current densities.

Synergistic Effects of Entropy Tuning in Niobium‐Based Oxide Anode for Fast‐Charging Lithium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An entropy‐tuned niobium‐based oxide (ETNO) anode for fast‐charging lithium‐ion batteries are presented, engineered via multi‐cation doping. The synergistic effects of entropy tuning result in excellent rate capability and long‐term durability under ultrafast charging conditions.
