Alloy development and shell mould casting of gamma TiAl
Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2003Recent studies of the properties and shell mould casting of gamma TiAl-based alloys in the authors' laboratory are summarised in this paper. As-cast and heat treated ternary alloys containing 44.2-47 at.% Al and 0-8 at.% Nb were investigated for oxidation resistance at 900 degreesC and crack propagation behaviour during cyclic thermal fatigue test ...

Microstructure refinement of cast TiAl alloys by β solidification
Scripta Materialia, 2004Microstructure refinement of TiAl alloys is realized by introducing β solidification in this paper. The obtained fine-grained cast microstructures can be optimized to be fine-grained fully lamellar structures merely by a one-step heat treatment. The present study may provide an alternative and cost-effective approach for microstructure refinement of ...

Creep strength of centrifugally cast Al-rich TiAl alloys
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2009Abstract High-temperature creep of a binary Al 60 Ti 40 (at.%) alloy in the as-cast state and after annealing at 1223 K for 200 h which produced nearly lamellar γ-TiAl + r-Al 2 Ti microstructure was studied utilizing creep compression tests in a temperature range between 1173 and 1323 K in air.

Oxide Dispersion in Direct-Cast Gamma TiAl-Based Alloy
MRS Proceedings, 1994AbstractThe objective of this study is to evaluate the high temperature behavior of γ TiAl-based alloy sheets containing AI2O3 particles, produced by a combination of vacuum induction melting, use of a CaO crucible, and direct sheet casting, over a wide temperature range. Alumina particles, having a tendency to coagulate during solidification of a TiAl

Microstructures and Creep Behavior of As-Cast TiAl-Nb Alloy
Materials Science Forum, 2015By means of creep properties measurement and microstructure observation, an investigation was carried out to study the creep behaviors of the as-cast TiAl-Nb alloy at temperature near 910 oC. Results showed that the microstructure of as-cast TiAl-Nb alloy consisted of γ/α2 phases with the lamellar feature, and the boundaries with irregular serrated ...

Ductility Improvement of Direct-Cast Gamma TiAl-Based Alloy Sheet
MRS Proceedings, 1996ABSTRACTFor improving the room temperature tensile ductility of direct-cast gamma TiAl sheets without affecting their high-temperature strength, direct sheet casting with T1B2 particle dispersion is employed and conducted. The T1B2 addition and rapid cooling results in the formation of a fine equiaxed grain microstructure with an average grain size of ∼

Surface defect tolerance of a cast TiAl alloy in fatigue
Scripta Materialia, 2001The effect of artificially introduced surface defects on the high cycle fatigue behavior of the Ti-47Al-2W-0.5Si alloy has been investigated and correlated with the crack growth behavior ar temperatures of 700°C and 750°C. The results are reported in the form of Kitagawa diagram in which the safe and unsafe zones for crack advance are defined.

Microstructural refinement in cast TiAl alloys by solid state transformations
Scripta Materialia, 2005Abstract It is shown that a new fine microstructure with significantly improved tensile properties can be generated in massively transformed, quenched and tempered samples of TiAl-based alloys. It is also shown that quench-cracking can be avoided in samples up to at least 20 mm diameter if samples are quenched into molten salt.

Advances in optimisation of mechanical properties in cast TiAl alloys
Intermetallics, 2005Abstract The room temperature tensile properties of a number of cast TiAl-based alloys, which have been grain-refined either by additions of boron or by a new quenching and ageing treatment, have been assessed. It has been found that in the alloys which have been grain-refined by boron addition, the size of the titanium boride particles, which is ...
