In Portugal, chestnut (Castanea sativa) is mainly consumed unprocessed. Only a small amount of the exceeding production is used in the candy industry. The objective of this study was to find an alternative industrial utilisation for chestnuts, by extrusion-cooking.

AN IMPROVED GENETIC MAP FOR CASTANEA MOLLISSIMA/CASTANEA DENTATA AND ITS RELATIONSHIP TO THE GENETIC MAP OF CASTANEA SATIVA

We have added 275 AFLP and 24 SSR markers and the 5SrDNA locus to a previously published genetic map based on a hybrid cross between Castunea mollissima and C dentata. The SSR markers, 5SrDNA locus, and one isozyme locus also permitted us to correlate the linkage groups in the published genetic map of C. sativa with those in our C.

Spicaria fumosa Ell. & Ev.), P. truncata sp.nov., Pseudomicrodochium gen.nov., type species P. aciculare sp.nov., P. cylindricum sp.nov.

Die Esskastanie (Castanea sativa Mill.) gehort zur Familie Fagaceae; ihre Heimat liegt im Kaukasus. Bedeutende Anbaugebiete sind neben China (C. mollissima) vor allem die westlichen Mittelmeerlander. Der laubabwerfende Baum wird sehr alt und erreicht eine Hohe von 20–40 m.
