Evaluation of a heat flux sensor for spray cooling for the die casting processes

Journal of Materials Processing Technology, 2007
During the die casting process, lubricants are sprayed in order to cool the dies and facilitate the ejection of the casting. In this paper, a new technique for measuring the heat flux during lubricant application is evaluated. Data from experiments conducted using water spray are first presented.

Equation Model of the Cooling Process in High Pressure Die-Casting Technology

Advanced Materials Research, 2012
In the die-casting technology there is very necessary to determine cooling process of castings in metallic mold especially in the case of castings with great weight to achieve quality surface and properties of the casting without any defects. To regulate cooling in the time course, it is desirable to develop equation of regulation system that ...

An Experimental Study on the Cooling Effect of Die Casting Die Insert Cooling Devices

Heat Transfer, Volume 3, 2003
Water is usually introduced into a die insert in die casting through a water line to reduce the temperature of the die insert and thus prevent its cracking. In many cases, a drilled waterline circuit is not possible due to confinement of the space. Bubblers or baffles then become typical water passage systems for die insert cooling. This paper presents

Novel cooling channel shapes in pressure die casting

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, 2001
AbstractThe pressure die casting involves die designs incorporating cooling channels positioned to facilitate the controlled extraction of energy from a solidifying casting. It is now known that subcooled nucleate boiling can occur in cooling channels and this paper is concerned with novel cooling channel shapes that are optimized to promote and ...

Evaluation of the cooling efficiency of pulse spray for high-pressure die casting processes

The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, 2021
This article examined the cooling efficiency of pulse spray under different pressures, duty cycles, and frequencies. The cooling curves of the surface temperature were measured, and the cooling efficiency was evaluated by the temperature drop and the recovery temperature at the die surface.

Cooling-Assisted Ultrasonic Grain Refining of Aluminum E380 Die Casting Alloy

International Journal of Metalcasting, 2021
Die cast alloys have to be poured at temperatures much higher than their liquidus in order to make the alloys castable. Pouring at a high temperature reduces the formation of dendrites in the shot sleeve which tend to choke the flow at the in-gate but causes increased damage to the shot tooling and dies. Forming globular grains in the shot sleeve is an

Thermal Characterization of Air-Cooled Aluminum Die-Cast Cylinder Blocks with Various Cast Iron and Aluminum Liners

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2011
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">In most air-cooled engines, aluminum cylinder blocks are lined with cast iron, which enjoys a higher wear resistance than aluminum. Recently, rather than a turned periphery, an increasing number of cast iron liners have employed as-cast periphery with projections, so the liner ...

Relation between cooling rates and microstructures in gravity-die-cast AZ91D disks

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B, 1999
In-die temperature measurements during the casting of 3.5- and 11.7-mm-thick disks in metal dies at 100 °C, 200 °C, and 400 °C enables calculation of the heat flux from the casting to the die as a function of the casting parameters. Using the flux so determined, the temperature field in the plates could be calculated in agreement with measured values ...

The Relationship between Dendrite Arm Spacing and Cooling Rate of Al-Si Casting Alloys in High Pressure Die Casting

International Journal of Metalcasting, 2014
The effects of cooling rate on the solidification behavior of Al-8.5%Si-3%Cu and Al-11%Si-3%Cu alloys were studied during high pressure die casting (HPDC). The HPDC experiment was conducted by using the dies with three steps for three different cooling rates.
