Sexual communication in castniid moths: Males mark their territories and appear to bear all chemical burden. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Castniid moths (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) display a butterfly-like reproductive behavior, i.e., they use visual stimuli for mate location and females have apparently lost their pheromone glands in an evolutionary context.

Infestação de Telchin licus licus (Drury, 1770) (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) em Variedades RB de Cana-de-Açúcar

open access: yesDiversitas Journal, 2020

Rediscovery of Vadina hodeei hodeei (Oberthür, 1881) in Colombia (Lepidoptera: Castniidae)

open access: yesSHILAP
We report on a specimen of Vadina hodeei hodeei (Oberthür, 1881) collected in 2019 and several more collected in 2024. As far as we can ascertain, the previously most recently collected dated specimen was in 1931, so the subspecies hadn’t been collected

Fine Structure of Antennal Sensilla of Paysandisia archon and Electrophysiological Responses to Volatile Compounds Associated with Host Palms. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Paysandisia archon (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) is a serious pest of palm trees. A comprehensive knowledge of the insect olfactory system is essential for the development of efficient semiochemical-based control methods.

More to legs than meets the eye: Presence and function of pheromone compounds on heliothine moth legs

open access: yesJournal of Evolutionary Biology, Volume 36, Issue 5, Page 780-794, May 2023., 2023
In this study, we investigated chemicals in leg extracts of three heliothine moth species (Chloridea (Heliothis) virescens, Chloridea (Heliothis) subflexa and Helicoverpa armigera). Identical pheromone compounds were present on the legs in both sexes of all three species, with no striking interspecies or intersex differences.

Adding leaves to the Lepidoptera tree: capturing hundreds of nuclear genes from old museum specimens

open access: yesSystematic Entomology, Volume 46, Issue 3, Page 649-671, July 2021., 2021
A target enrichment kit and workflow to sequence and process hundreds to thousands of loci for recent and old Lepidoptera specimens is presented. Taxa are added to the Lepidoptera phylogeny based on museum specimens collected between 1892 and 2017. Lepidoptera systematic relationships are discussed.
