The Uterus Masculinus of Castor canadensis

Journal of Mammalogy, 1958
The remarkably large bicornuate uterus masculinus of the European beaver, Castor fiber , has been noted by various workers since attention was first directed to this structure by Brandt and Ratzeburg (1829). More recently it has been described by Hinze (1950) and Freye (1953) who comment that the American beaver, C.

Responses of beaver (Castor canadensis Kuhl) to predator chemicals

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1995
Free-ranging beaver (Castor canadensis) in two different beaver populations in New York State were exposed to predator chemicals to test feeding inhibition. Solvent extracts of feces were applied to stem sections of aspen, the preferred food tree of beavers, permitting smelling and tasting the samples.

DIRECTIONAL TREE FELLING BY BEAVERS (CASTOR CANADENSIS)

Northwestern Naturalist, 2004
Abstract By measuring the falling angle of 888 trees of a variety of sizes cut near 8 different dams in southwestern Saskatchewan, we tested the hypothesis that beavers (Castor canadensis) fell trees in a non-random direction. We predicted that trees would be preferentially felled towards the dam to minimize the costs of transporting materials to the ...

Beavers (Castor fiber and Castor canadensis), the founders of habitats and phytophages

Biology Bulletin Reviews, 2014
A review of the literature on the influence of beavers on the environment has been presented with regard to following aspects: (1) specific features of the ecology of beavers crucial for understanding their effects on the environment: (2) changes in the physical characteristics of habitats due to the activity of beavers (beavers as engineers); (3) the ...

Isolation and characterization of microsatellite loci in the beaver (Castor canadensis)

Molecular Ecology Resources, 2008
AbstractWe have isolated and characterized 10 microsatellite loci in the beaver (Castor canadensis). Sixty individuals from southern and central Illinois were screened at each locus. All loci exhibited moderate levels of polymorphism, ranging from five to 13 alleles per locus with average heterozygosity ranging from 0.317 to 0.867.

Gastric Secretion in the Beaver (Castor canadensis)

Journal of Mammalogy, 1953
The beaver (Castor canadensis) is generally conceded to be a vegetarian. This animal spends much of his life in waters which may abound in fish, but apparently nobody ever saw a beaver eat one (Warren, 1927). Willow and poplar bark are the main items in the dietary of the beaver (Warren, loc. cit.; Bradt, 1947). The summer diet may be supplemented with

Energy Requirements of Beavers (Castor canadensis) Swimming Underwater

Physiological Zoology, 1997
Energy requirements of beavers (Castor canadensis) swimming voluntarily underwater were investigated in Neumünster Zoo (Germany) in a covered, still-water swim channel with oxygen and carbon dioxide respirometry. During the experiments, all activities of the beavers were monitored and recorded.

Characterization of the North American beaver (Castor canadensis) papillomavirus genome

Veterinary Microbiology, 2014
The papillomaviruses comprise a large group of viruses that cause proliferations of the stratified squamous epithelium of skin and mucosa in a variety of animals. An earlier report identified a novel papillomavirus of the North American beaver, Castor canadensis (CcanPV1) that was associated with cutaneous exophytic lesions.

Pheromonal activity of single castoreum constituents in beaver,Castor canadensis

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1991
Behavioral activity of single components of beaver castoreum was demonstrated for the first time. In four experiments samples were presented to free-ranging beaver in their family territories. First, responses to whole castoreum and anal gland secretion (AGS) from males and females were tested.

Nitrogen budget of a subarctic stream altered by beaver (Castor canadensis)

Oecologia, 1984
Beaver (Castor canadensis) influence stream ecosystems through their wood cutting and dam building activities. To quantify this influence we have used measured rates of nitrogen dynamics to construct a nitrogen budget for a section of a second order stream in eastern Québec and a beaver dam in that stream.
