1999
The European beaver, Castor fiber, was native to Austria. However, beavers were completely extirpated from Austria in the 1860s. In the 1970s and 1980s beavers were reintroduced to Austria along the Danube River east of Vienna. This east Austrian population has grown and spread. Smaller populations also exist in northern and western Austria.
