A new cataclysmic variable star

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1992
We report spectrophotometric observation of a new cataclysmic variable star J 05.23, discovered as a byproduct of the Calan-Tololo Survey of quasars and Seyfert galaxies. From the ESO Quick Blue Chart we estimated a B magnitude of 17.5. The spectrum between 3200 and 6500 angstroms shows strong emission in the He I lambda-5876 angstroms, HBeta, HGamma ...

Three unusual cataclysmic variable stars

Nature, 1983
A recent survey for variable objects1 using an automated search procedure detected a number of variables for which it was only possible to give a preliminary classification. Many of the sample have now been observed spectroscopically on a large telescope and definite classifications made.

Cataclysmic Variable Stars

1995
The study of cataclysmic variables - interacting binary stars containing a white dwarf accreting from an orbiting companion - is undergoing an exciting renaissance, as it embraces observations at all wavelengths. Cataclysmic variables allow, in particular, the direct and detailed study of equilibrium and non-equilibrium accretion discs; in turn these ...

Introduction to Cataclysmic Variable Stars

2016
Cataclysmic Variables are semi-detached binaries consisting of a White Dwarf that accretes material from a companion star (usually a Red Dwarf) that transfers matter to the White Dwarf. In this chapter I give a description of cataclysmic variable stars, their composition, classification and spectral characteristics.

Optical Properties of Cataclysmic Variable Stars

1990
An overview is given of the optical behavior of cataclysmic variables, including the various types, the canonical model of these close binary systems, the causes of eruptions, short-term variations, and orbital periods, and correlations of light curve parameters with physical properties.

Cataclysmic Variables as Interacting Binary Stars

1985
The periodical literature on cataclysmic variables (CVs) and closely related topics has grown rapidly in recent years. In the Astrophysical Journal alone, the number of papers published on this subject in 1982 was about 80, the rate having doubled in three years. The other major journals taken together yield a similar annual total.

Spectroscopy and Spectrophotometry of Cataclysmic Variable Stars

1981
Distances and luminosities of individual cataclysmic variable stars (as opposed to statistical properties of the group as a whole) can best be acquired by studying the secondary stars of these short-period binary systems. Since the secondary stars are of late spectral type, observations in the near infrared are especially useful.

Visible and Infrared Studies of Cataclysmic Variable Stars

1983
The purpose of this Thesis is to investigate the infrared properties of Cataclysmic Variable Stars, in particular, to develop the techniques needed to study the contributions to the infrared light of the red dwarf and the accretion disc around its white dwarf companion. A particular requirement of these techniques is that they do not rely on a model of
