Subject analysis during the cataloging process: the case of academic libraries

open access: yesKnjižnica, 2011
Purpose: The study tried to answer how catalogers determine the subject of a document. The aim of the research is to understand: (1) which parts of document are most important in the subject analysis process, (2) which approaches in the subject ...

Catalog-to-catalog reductions - Results for the FK, N30, and GC catalogs

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1992
It is shown that previous computations of catalog-to-catalog differences, whether by the bin-and-average method or by least-squares adjustment combined with an expansion in an incomplete set of basis functions, have all been performed at inappropriate epoch(s) of place.

NFDI MatWerk Ontology (MWO): A BFO‐Compliant Ontology for Research Data Management in Materials Science and Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents the NFDI‐MatWerk Ontology (MWO), a Basic Formal Ontology‐based framework for interoperable research data management in materials science and engineering (MSE). Covering consortium structures, research data management resources, services, and instruments, MWO enables semantic integration, Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and ...

Evolution of Western Library Catalogs: The Rising Expectations of Users

open access: yesInternational Journal of Librarianship, 2018
This paper traces the historical development of library catalogs from primitive catalogs in ancient times to current next generational catalogs, which are summarized into three stages: the agricultural catalog stage, the industrial catalog stage and the ...

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Cataloging minerals, part 1: The categories of colonialism and extraction

open access: yesMuseum & Society
Mineral wealth has motivated and funded extractionist empires, often at the expense of local communities, labor, environments, and public health. Yet those connections are not recorded in traditional mineral catalogs, which treat specimens as divorced ...

Symbolic Regression and Multi‐Objective Optimization of the Flory–Huggins Interaction Parameter for Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
We develop a data‐driven method to derive the mathematical expressions of the Flory–Huggins interaction parameter χ for the swelling behavior of temperature–responsive hydrogels. Starting from initial assumptions of χ, our workflow combines Bayesian optimization, Flory–Rehner theory, and symbolic regression to generate candidate χ expressions.

Incorporating Screencasts In Online Teaching

open access: yesInternational Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning, 2007
Despite success in teaching the class ‘Organization of Information in a School Library Media Center’ (EDCI 545) online, one component continued to be a problem for students, the Dewey Decimal Classification System.

New AI‐Assisted Approach for Expanding the Solution Space: Application to Lattice Structure Design

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces an innovative framework for designing structured materials by ex panding the design space through reparameterization of qualitative variables into continuous structural descriptors. Combined with machine‐learning‐based prediction and multi‐objective optimization, the approach enables the discovery of novel lattice architectures ...

Semantic Modeling in Materials Science and Engineering With Platform MaterialDigital Core Ontology 3.0

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The community‐driven Platform MaterialDigital Core Ontology (PMDco) 3.0 is introduced as a Basic Formal Ontology‐aligned semantic backbone for the processing–structure–properties paradigm in Materials Science and Engineering. Modular engineering, automated releases, and validation workflows are highlighted and key semantic patterns for materials ...
