Plant Robotics for Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly Robots: Insights from Actuation Characteristics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Plants are promising materials for building sustainable and eco‐friendly robots due to their inherent multifunctionality, with actuation playing a crucial role. This article focuses on the physical movements of plants and, from the perspective of actuation characteristics, explores representative plant species and their behaviors, the current state of ...

Measuring Spatial Accessibility of Health Care Providers – Introduction of a Variable Distance Decay Function within the Floating Catchment Area (FCA) Method

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
We integrated recent improvements within the floating catchment area (FCA) method family into an integrated ‘iFCA`method. Within this method we focused on the distance decay function and its parameter.

MDP25‐VDAC3 Complex Orchestrates Actin Remodeling and Mitochondrial Dynamics to Modulate Innate Immunity in Arabidopsis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study reveals that actin remodeling regulates mitochondrial elongation as a defense strategy in plants. Flagellin perception induces fusion‐dependent elongation, supported by cortical actin bundles, to repair damage and boost ATP and ROS production.

Spot sampling of nutrient concentrations in the Puarenga catchment, Rotorua [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The Centre for Biodiversity and Ecology Research was approached by Tūhourangi Tribal Authority for assistance with measuring water quality in streams in the Puarenga Stream catchment. Water sampling was subsequently undertaken on 18 July 2011 and samples

Water‐Efficient Smart Drip Irrigation Enabled by a Low‐Power and High‐Efficiency Flexible Electromagnetic Actuator

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Water scarcity poses a critical threat to global food security. A low‐power, flexible electromagnetic actuator is presented for smart drip irrigation systems. The device achieves precise, wide‐range flow modulation (0.05–5.8 mL/min) in response to real‐time plant demands, reducing water consumption compared to conventional flood irrigation.

Debris Flows at the River Mletis Khevi (Greater Caucasus Mountains, Georgia) and its Assessment Methods [PDF]

open access: yes
The erosional debris flow processes on the right side of the riverbed of Mletis-Khevi, a tributary of the Tetri Aragvi, are assessed on the basis of field and laboratory studies. The values of the mountain slope erosion in the Mletis-Khevi catchment area

All‐PEG‐Like Block Copolymers Self‐Assemble into Stealth Nanocarriers for Drug Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Self‐assembling nanoparticles composed entirely of POEGMA are engineered by exploiting side‐chain–dependent amphiphilicity and tunable thermoresponsive behavior. These single‐material nanocarriers encapsulate diverse hydrophobic drugs with high efficiency, retain therapeutic activity, improve in vivo efficacy, and evade anti‐PEG antibodies.

Dynamics of a salinity-prone agricultural catchment driven by markets, farmers' attitude and climate change [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
An agent-based simulation model has been developed with CORMAS combining simplified bio-physical processes of land cover, dry-land salinity changes, rainfall, farm profitability and farmer decisions on land uses in a dry-land agricultural catchment (no ...

Tailoring Sieving Pores and Electrochemical Interface Intercalation for Mechanically Resilient Recycled Micro‐Silicon Anodes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Here, an innovative strategy is proposed, using micron‐sized Si recovered from photovoltaic waste as raw material, combined with electrochemical lithium alloying, reacting with CO2 to obtain sieve‐like porous structure design to overcome mechanical dynamic limitations.

Long term nitrogen budget modelling in a small agricultural watershed: hydrological control assessment of nitrogen losses with semi-distributed (SWAT) and distributed (TNT2) models [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Nitrogen exports in catchments are known to be greatly variable because nitrogen cycle in watershed is controlled by different factors such as landuse, farm management practices, climate, soil type and hydrological setting.
