Diagnosis of bacteraemia in neonatal foals using 16S rRNA high‐throughput sequencing

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Sepsis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in foals. Early diagnosis can improve outcome but is complicated by non‐specific clinical signs and delayed confirmation of infection via blood culture. Molecular assays represent a rapid and more sensitive alternative.

Risk factors for recurrent catheter-related infections after catheter-related bloodstream infections [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2010
This study was performed to identify the risk factors for recurrent catheter-related infections (CRIs) following non-tunneled central venous catheter (CVC) reinsertion after catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs).A retrospective cohort was constructed from a computer database for patients who underwent reinsertion of a non-tunneled CVC after ...

Implantable electrochemical sensors for continuous blood monitoring

open access: yesFlexMat, EarlyView.
Implantable electrochemical sensors enable direct, in situ, and continuous blood monitoring, shifting diagnosis from population‐based averages to dynamic, individualized analysis. This review systematically examines the influence of the unique blood properties on sensor design.

Outpatient preoperative parenteral nutrition in malnourished surgical patients: A feasibility study (the OPPORTUNITY study)

open access: yesNutrition in Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Preoperative parenteral nutrition (PN) improves outcomes in malnourished surgical patients. Traditionally, this requires hospital admission, increasing length of stay and costs—challenges worsened by limited hospital bed availability. Outpatient PN may offer a feasible alternative.

Catheter-related bloodstream infections in intensive care units: A systematic review with meta-analysis

open access: yes, 2008
Aim: This paper is a report of a systematic review and meta-analysis of strategies, other than antimicrobial coated catheters, hypothesized to reduce risk of catheter-related bloodstream infections and catheter colonization in the intensive care unit ...

Catheter-related bloodstream infections with coagulase-negative staphylococci: are antibiotics necessary if the catheter is removed? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Background Catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) with coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CoNS) are a common source of hospital-acquired bloodstream infections.

A structured multidisciplinary home parenteral nutrition program in a public healthcare system: Implementation model, nursing‐led training protocol, and 11‐year safety outcomes

open access: yesNutrition in Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is the standard of care for adults with chronic intestinal failure (CIF), but evidence from publicly funded healthcare systems in middle‐income countries is limited. This study describes an 11‐year experience of a structured, nursing‐led HPN program within Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS ...

Driving Drugs Deeper: Force‐Driven Microneedle Systems for Active Therapy and Their Road Towards Clinical Implementation

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Force‐driven microneedles are presented as active therapeutic microdevices that overcome the diffusion limits of conventional patches. By integrating gas generation, magnetic actuation, cavitation, or iontophoresis, these systems drive payloads deeper into tissue, enabling faster, more controlled delivery and highlighting key design principles and ...

Nonthermal plasma approaches for combating implant‐associated infections: A compendious review

open access: yesVIEW, EarlyView.
Implant‐associated infections pose serious clinical challenges. Non‐thermal plasma (NTP) modifications overcome this bottleneck in distinct ways relative to traditional sterilization methods. Gas‐phase plasmas generate highly energetic species, UV radiation and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS), which alter the implant surface properties.
