Investigating the relationship between luck beliefs causal attributions and well-being through a card game experiment

open access: yesScientific Reports
This study investigated the relationship between luck beliefs, causal attribution, and well-being through a card game experiment. Building on the two-factor model of luck beliefs–general belief in luck (Belief in Luck) and personal luck (Personal ...

Cultural diversity in beliefs regarding mental illness: comparison of Indonesian Muslims, Indonesian Christians, and Japanese non-religions

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology
A majority of Indonesians, approximately 90% of them, are Muslims and have been reported to religiously cope with symptoms of mental illness. This may depend on the degree of recognition of Western medicine and attribution to biological factors; however,

Partial depletion of plasminogen activator inhibitor‐1 decreases subcutaneous fat cell hypertrophy and liver cholesterol in high‐fat‐fed female mice

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Obesity raises blood levels of PAI‐1, a protein linked to metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease in people with obesity. In female mice fed a high‐fat diet, partially lowering PAI‐1 led to smaller subcutaneous fat cells and lower liver cholesterol, without changing body weight or insulin sensitivity.

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Mediating variables affecting sex differences in causal attribution

open access: yes, 1991
Since the early 1970's numerous researchers have been questioning the existence of sex differences in causal attribution. From those who claim differences exist, three models have been proposed: the general externality model, the female self-derogation ...

Agents and Patients in Physical Settings: Linguistic Cues Affect the Assignment of Causality in German and Tongan

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2017
Linguistic cues may be considered a potent tool for focusing attention on causes or effects. In this paper, we explore how different cues affect causal assignments in German and Tongan.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Causal webs in epidemiology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The notion of ‘causal web’ emerged in the epidemiological literature in the early Sixties and had to wait until the Nineties for a thorough critical appraisal. Famously, Nancy Krieger argued that such a notion isn’t helpful unless we specify what kind of

Attribution of intentional causation influences the perception of observed movements: behavioral evidence and neural correlates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Recent research on human agency suggests that intentional causation is associated with a subjective compression in the temporal interval between actions and their effects.
