On the Incommensurability of Feeling and Doing: The Illusion of Free Will. (Review of: Wegner, Daniel (2003) The Illusion of Conscious Will. MIT Press.)

open access: yes, 2003
Wegner’s book is on perceptual and motor illusions of free well and agency, but free will is much more profoundly illusory than any of the phenomena reported in his book. We never do anything because we feel like it, even it is feels as if we do, because

Analysis of Treacher Collins syndrome 4‐associated mutations in Schizosaccharomyces pombe

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Fission yeast models carrying Treacher Collins syndrome type 4‐associated mutations reveal that impaired processivity of RNA polymerase I leads to defective rRNA transcription. This study highlights the essential role of a conserved arginine residue in Pol I elongation and provides mechanistic insight into the pathogenesis of ribosomopathies.

Hands‐on protocol for preparing water‐soluble fractions from agri‐food samples for NMR‐based metabolomics analysis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol outlines a workflow for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)‐based metabolomics in the agri‐food sector. Using two case studies—strawberry leaves (solid matrix) and wine (liquid matrix)—it details the procedures for sample preparation, data acquisition, and processing.

Raman‐based label‐free microscopic analysis of the pancreas in living zebrafish larvae

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Forward stimulated Raman scattering (F‐SRS) and epi coherent anti‐Stokes Raman scattering (E‐CARS) allow label‐free discrimination of distinct subcellular structures in the pancreas of living zebrafish larvae. Given the straightforward applicability, we anticipate broad implementation of Raman microscopy in other organs and across various biomedical ...

Emergence and Reflexive Downward

open access: yesPrincipia: An International Journal of Epistemology, 2002
This paper responds to Jaegwon Kim's powerful objection to the very possibility of genuinely novel emergent properties Kim argue that the incoherence of reflexive downward causation means that the causal power of an emergent phenomenon is ultimately ...

Optimum load computation of a piezoelectric-based energy harvester

open access: yesTecnura
Objective: Maximum power extraction from piezoelectric energy harvesters is of key importance in the development of various current technologies. However, direct use of the maximum power transfer theorem on this type of energy harvester produces unstable
