Causal and inferential reasoning in animals.
2017Elucidating the nature, use, and origin of knowledge in animals is one of the major endeavors of comparative psychology. Two aspects of knowledge used in inferential reasoning are particularly relevant. First, there is the question of the types of relations established between stimuli (prediction vs. causation).

“Causal reasoning” in rats: A reappraisal.
Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, 2009It has recently been argued that rats engage in causal reasoning and they do so in a way that is consistent with Bayes net theories (Blaisdell, Sawa, Leising & Waldmann, 2006). This argument was based upon the finding that the tendency of cues to elicit approach to a food-well was reduced when their presentation was contingent on lever pressing.

Causal reasoning, causal probabilities, and conceptions of causation
Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part C: Studies in History and Philosophy of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, 2012The present paper deals with the tools that can be used to represent causation and to reason about it and, specifically, with their diversity. It focuses on so-called "causal probabilities"--that is, probabilities of effects given one of their causes--and critically surveys a recent paper in which Joyce (2010) argues that the values of these ...

Causal models for diagnostic reasoning
Artificial Intelligence in Engineering, 1989Abstract Theories of qualitative physics are crucial in developing knowledge-based systems in engineering. Basic models for diagnostic reasoning are based on causal connections between the system parameters. In this paper a knowledge representation and problem solving technique is presented as a ground-laying step.

In this paper we present a causal theory based on an interventionist conception of causality, i.e., a preference to select causes among a set of actions which an agent has the ability to perform or not to perform (free will). The most interesting proposals encountered in the literature, in nonmonotonic reasoning, all revolve around the ordered notion ...

Embracing causality in default reasoning
Artificial Intelligence, 1988Abstract The purpose of this note is to draw attention to certain aspects of causal reasoning which are pervasive in ordinary discourse yet, based on the author's scan of the literature, have not received due treatment by logical formalisms of common-sense reasoning.
