Nurses' Perspectives on a Communication Model Between Providers and Mechanically Ventilated Patients in the Intensive Care Unit

open access: yesNursing in Critical Care, Volume 31, Issue 6, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Communication with mechanically ventilated patients in intensive care is complex. Decades of research demonstrate that communication barriers are commonly experienced and one of the most challenging experiences during an intensive care stay. Support for the health care providers in these situations could be a model for communication,

Predominance of Externally Mixed Black Carbon Over the Tibetan Plateau During the Asian Summer Monsoon

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract The mixing state of black carbon (BC) strongly influences its lifetime and radiative forcing over the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Previous observations, mostly conducted during the non‐monsoon season, suggested that thickly coated BC dominates due to long‐range transport from South Asia.

A Hybrid Superdroplet–Bin Microphysics Approach Reveals How Large Salt Particles Trigger Rain in Non‐Precipitating Warm Convective Clouds

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract This study develops a Superdroplet‐Bin hybrid microphysics scheme within the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model to investigate hygroscopic seeding of warm convective clouds. The Super‐droplet method describes 3D transport, deliquescence, condensation, and collision‐coalescence growth of seeding agents or solution droplets, while the ...

Shipborne Measurements of Mineral Dust and Black Carbon Aerosols Over the Southern Ocean in the Austral Summer

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract Atmospheric mineral dust and black carbon (BC) aerosols play important roles in the Earth's climate system, yet direct observations over the Southern Ocean (SO) are scarce. In this study, we present the characteristics of airborne water‐insoluble particles (WIPs) collected during a cruise of the R/V Shirase in the Australian and Indian sectors

Closure between measured and modeled cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) using size-resolved aerosol compositions in downtown Toronto [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2006
Measurements of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) were made in downtown Toronto during August and September, 2003. CCN measurements were performed at 0.58% supersaturation using a thermal-gradient diffusion chamber, whereas the aerosol size distribution ...

Sulfur Dioxide Point Sources Remain Important for Daytime Plume‐Scale New Particle Formation in the United States: Case Study for Gary, Indiana During the Summer 2023 AEROMMA Aircraft Campaign

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Plumes from sulfur dioxide (SO2) point sources have been shown to be significant contributors to new particle formation (NPF), but SO2 emissions in the United States (US) have decreased drastically by ∼10× since the early 2000s. We present observations of plume‐scale NPF from SO2 point sources over the industrial hub in Gary, Indiana and ...

Cloud Microphysics and Drizzle Relationships With CCN Modality in Southern Ocean Stratocumuli

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Extended‐range high resolution cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) modality relationships to cloud microphysics and drizzle of the First Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE 1) were consistent with Physics of Stratocumulus Tops (POST) and Marine Stratus/Stratocumulus Experiment (MASE) observations.

The Lupus Damage Index Revision Program: Results From the Item Generation and Reduction Phases

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Volume 78, Issue 10, Page 1449-1466, October 2026.
Objective A data‐driven and expert/patient consensus‐based project to develop a revised Systemic Lupus International Collaborating Clinics (SLICC)/American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Damage Index (SDI) is under way supported by SLICC, ACR, and the Lupus Foundation of America. Our objective is to report the item generation and reduction phase results

Visible‐Blind Near‐Infrared Organic Vision Sensors for Imaging in Adverse Environmental Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 14, Issue 38, 16 October 2026.
This work presents high‐performance visible‐blind NIR OPDs enabled by a multilayer optical modulation layer. The devices achieve strong visible‐light suppression and enhanced NIR sensitivity, enabling robust imaging in foggy or low‐light environments.
