Ciz1 cooperates with cyclin-A-CDK2 to activate mammalian DNA replication in vitro [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Initiation of mammalian DNA replication can be reconstituted from isolated G1-phase nuclei and cell extracts, supplemented with cyclin-dependent protein kinases (CDKs).

Both Chromosome Decondensation and Condensation Are Dependent on DNA Replication in C.elegans Embryos [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
During cell division, chromatin alternates between a condensed state to facilitate chromosome segregation and a decondensed form when DNA replicates.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Comprehensive characterization of plasma cell-free Echinococcus spp. DNA in echinococcosis patients using ultra-high-throughput sequencing.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2020
BACKGROUND:Echinococcosis is a life-threatening parasitic disease caused by Echinococcus spp. tapeworms with over one million people affected globally at any time. The Echinococcus spp.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Identifying a role for Ciz1 in the DNA damage response [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In proliferating cells, cell cycle arrest and DNA repair are induced upon detection of DNA damage. The DNA damage response (DDR) to double strand DNA breaks is mediated by phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase-like protein kinases (PIKKs), which propagate DDR ...

Cell‐free DNA results lead to unexpected diagnosis

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, 2017
Key Clinical Message Maternal cell‐free DNA (cfDNA) results that are discordant with the diagnostic fetal karyotype should prompt further investigation.

Cell-free DNA in non-small cell lung cancer

open access: yesActa Medica Lituanica, 2017
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-associated deaths worldwide. Surgery is the standard treatment for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
