In formulating Cell Theory, Schleiden(1) wrote in 1838: “Every higher organism is an aggregate of fully circumscribed and self-contained unit beings, the cells.” This basic tenet has been extraordinarily fruitful and influential in biology and medicine, and in many aspects its usefulness continues unabated.

Cells interact not only with each other, but also with the extracellular matrix, which consists of proteoglycan, collagen, elastin, and multiadhesive proteins such as laminin. Both cell/cell and cell/matrix interactions require cell adhesion molecules, some of which occur in cell junctions.

Multilineage cells from human adipose tissue: implications for cell-based therapies.
Tissue engineering, 2001Future cell-based therapies such as tissue engineering will benefit from a source of autologous pluripotent stem cells. For mesodermal tissue engineering, one such source of cells is the bone marrow stroma.

Notch signaling: cell fate control and signal integration in development.
Science, 1999Notch signaling defines an evolutionarily ancient cell interaction mechanism, which plays a fundamental role in metazoan development. Signals exchanged between neighboring cells through the Notch receptor can amplify and consolidate molecular differences,

Abstract Several approaches in a variety of biological systems are being used in an attempt to understand cellular recognition at the chemical level. The precise molecular events in cell recognition have not yet been established.

A panel of antigen-specific mouse helper T cell clones was characterized according to patterns of lymphokine activity production, and two types of T cell were distinguished. Type 1 T helper cells (TH1) produced IL 2, interferon-gamma, GM-CSF, and IL 3 in

Gene therapy based on the use of viral vectors is entirely dependent on the use of animal cell lines, mainly of mammalian origin, but also of insect origin. As for any biotechnology product for clinical use, viral -vectors have to be produced with cells derived from an extensively characterized cell bank to maintain the appropriate standard for ...

Cell length, cell growth and cell division
Nature, 1976When cells of E. coli reach a certain critical length, which is constant in all growth conditions and eqqal to twice the minimum cell length, they abruptly increase their rate of elongation and divide about 20 min later. Chromosome replication terminates at about this same cell length but is not the signal for the change in rate of cell elongation.

Mast Cells and Cell-to-Cell Interactions in Airways
American Review of Respiratory Disease, 1991Dog mastocytomas (anatomic and biochemical features comparable to normal dog and human mast cells) were used to study actions of mast cell mediators on several airway effector systems. We showed mastocytoma cell adherence to both cultured tracheal epithelial cells and tracheal tissue sections for greater than 48 h that was abolished completely by ...

Cell-Cell Interactions in the Testis*
Endocrine Reviews, 1987In conclusion, the information available indicates that the interactions between different cell types in the testis play an important role in the control and maintenance of testicular functions. Further characterization of these interactions will clearly provide insight into the cell biology of the testis and into the regulation of cellular ...
