Surface charge of protoplasts and their significance in cell-cell interaction

Planta, 1978
ζ-potential of mesophyll protoplasts of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), petunia (Petunia hybrida Hort.), turnip (Brassica rapa L.) and cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walpers) was determined by use of a cell electrophoresis apparatus. All protoplasts examined showed a constant negative value of-10 to-35 mV.

Influence of red cell surface charge on red cell membrane curvature

Pflgers Archiv European Journal of Physiology, 1988
The wellknown biconcave shape of resting RBC reflects an intrinsic overall negative spontaneous membrane curvature. It depends to a high degree on the integrity of the spectrin-actin-ankyrin-Band-3 hetero-complex. Alterations of this complex have previously been shown to be associated with shape transitions, which have been abolished by treatment with ...

Interaction of polycations with cell-surface negative charges of epithelial cells

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 1992
The interaction between various polycations and cultured glomerular epithelial cells was studied by cell electrophoresis. It was shown that the glomerular epithelial cell presents a negatively charged surface which imparts a zeta potential of -29.0 +/- 1.5 mV at the peripheral layer of the plasma membrane.

Changes in Surface Charge of HeLa Cells during the Cell Cycle

Nature, 1967
A METHOD of obtaining large numbers of fixed cells in metaphase arrested by colchicine, from a population of cells growing on a glass surface, by a method dependent on the attenuated adhesion of the cells to the surface has been described1. A modification of this method was suggested to obtain a viable population of synchronous cells.

Adhesion and spreading of cells on charged surfaces

Journal of Theoretical Biology, 1975
Rival theories of cell adhesion are divided into long-range or contact, respectively. An experimental observation capable of deciding between them is the increasing attachment of negatively charged cells to surfaces of increasing negative charge density.

The cell surface charge of Bodo sp. (Kinetoplastida: Bodonidae)

European Journal of Protistology, 1993
Cytochemistry, using cationized ferritin particles at pH 7.2 and colloidal iron particles at pH 1.8, and cell electrophoresis were used to analyze the surface charge of the protozoan Bodo sp. Surface anionic sites are homogeneously distributed throughout the protozoan surface, including the flagella, the cytostome and the flagellar pocket.

Electrostatic Behavior of the Charge-Regulated Bacterial Cell Surface

Langmuir, 2008
The electrostatic behavior of the charge-regulated surfaces of Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Bacillus brevis was studied using numerical modeling in conjunction with potentiometric titration and electrophoretic mobility data as a function of solution pH and electrolyte composition. Assuming a polyelectrolytic polymeric bacterial cell

Surface Charge of Endothelial Cells Estimated from Electrophoretic Mobility

Membrane Biochemistry, 1989
The surface charge density of endothelial cells was estimated from cell electrophoresis. Cultured endothelial cells from the bovine pulmonary artery were suspended in saline and placed in the lumen of a glass capillary. A voltage was applied across the capillary ends and the velocity imparted to the cells was measured with a microscope.

Size-dependent mobile surface charge model of cell electrophoresis

Biophysical Chemistry, 2005
A model that accurately predicts the effects of cellular size and electric field strength on electrophoretic mobility has been developed. Previous models have predicted that electrophoretic mobility (EPM) is dependent only on cell surface charge, bath viscosity and ionic strength of the electrolyte.

Influence of red cell shape on surface charge topography

Experimental Cell Research, 1978
Abstract Human red blood cells (RBCs), transformed from discocytes into crenated shapes by incubation in hyperosmotic NaCl, have increased rates of agglutination in the presence of either poly- l -lysine (PLL) or soybean agglutinin (SBA). Reversion to discocytes by resuspension in isoosmotic NaCl lowers agglutination rates back to normal levels ...
