Decreased Cell Surface Charge in Cystic Fibrosis Epithelia

Cell Biochemistry and Function, 1997
A colloid titration technique has been used to determine the surface charge of cystic fibrosis (CF) and corresponding non-CF epithelial cells. We have shown that the negative surface charge of CF epithelial cells is significantly reduced in comparison with non-CF cells.

Influence of red cell shape on surface charge topography

Experimental Cell Research, 1978
Abstract Human red blood cells (RBCs), transformed from discocytes into crenated shapes by incubation in hyperosmotic NaCl, have increased rates of agglutination in the presence of either poly- l -lysine (PLL) or soybean agglutinin (SBA). Reversion to discocytes by resuspension in isoosmotic NaCl lowers agglutination rates back to normal levels ...

Cell surface charge and regulation of cell division of 3T3 cells and transformed derivatives

Experimental Cell Research, 1975
Abstract The cell surface charge of 3T3, 3T6, SV40-3T3 cells and trypsin-, neuraminidase- and serumtreated preparations of these has been characterized by microcell electrophoresis. At 25 °C, density-inhibited 3T3 cells show a decrease in electrophoretic mobility when treated with various stimuli of cell division. This effect is not observed at 25 °C

Influence of red cell surface charge on red cell membrane curvature

Pflgers Archiv European Journal of Physiology, 1988
The wellknown biconcave shape of resting RBC reflects an intrinsic overall negative spontaneous membrane curvature. It depends to a high degree on the integrity of the spectrin-actin-ankyrin-Band-3 hetero-complex. Alterations of this complex have previously been shown to be associated with shape transitions, which have been abolished by treatment with ...

Distribution of cell surface charges on mesothelium and lymphatic endothelium

Microvascular Research, 1986
The distribution of anionic sites on the luminal surfaces of the peritoneal mesothelium and lymphatic endothelium was investigated by injecting cationized ferritin (CF) intraperitoneally. After washing with phosphate-buffered saline, the diaphragm was fixed and processed for electron microscopy.

Radiation-induced changes on cell surface charges

International Journal of Radiation Applications and Instrumentation. Part C. Radiation Physics and Chemistry, 1987
Abstract Upon the effects of ionizing radiations the structure and consequently the function of plasma membranes are perturbed. One of their features, the surface charges of cells are altered, accordingly. More and more techniques are becoming available to study these phenomena, in various regions of a cell.

Alterations in surface charge density versus changes in surface charge topography in aging red blood cells

Blut, 1980
The changes in hematological parameters and physicochemical composition of red cells which accompany their aging in vivo and the results of recent experiments in which the peripheral zone of density fractionated erythrocytes were labeled with positively charged colloids or treated with relatively high molecular weight polycations suggest a reordering ...

Free radicals as probes of cell surface charge

Journal of Electrostatics, 1988
Abstract Surface charge plays an important role in determining the energetics of biomembrane interactions and influences the electrical field that acts across the lipid bilayer and its intrinsic proteins. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy can be employed to estimate surface charge either through the use of amphiphilic spin label probes or by the ...

Effects of hyperthermia on cell surface charge and cell survival in mastocytoma cells.

Cancer research, 1981
Changes in the structure of the surface of mastocytoma cells were induced by hyperthermia and were investigated by means of cell electrophoresis. A decrease in the cell electrophoretic mobility was detected as early as 15 min after treatment at 42 degrees and progressed more rapidly under hypoxic conditions than under oxic conditions.
