Background: Many studies have shown an increase in the prevalence of arrhythmias with advancing age. However, little is known about arrhythmias in centenarians. Method and Results: Thirty‐two Japanese centenarians aged 100–106 years (14 males, 18 females) were studied. All of them had 12‐lead EGGs, and 22 also had 24‐hour ambulatory monitoring.

To the Editor.— Spinal anesthesia for a 102-year-old patient as described by Milliken and Milliken ( 218 :1435, 1971) is indeed a rarity but is not a record. After a thorough study of the published material on geriatric anesthetics, they concluded that this was the oldest recorded patient so treated.

Emergence of Centenarians and Super-centenarians
1997Until about 1950 centenarians were quite rare, and their number grew only slowly. Examinations of reported centenarians in the Nordic countries indicate that most reports of centenarians in the last century were not genuine. It is plausible that there were no true centenarians prior to 1800.
