Cosmic censorship and spherical gravitational collapse with tangential pressure [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We study the spherical gravitational collapse of a compact object under the approximation that the radial pressure is identically zero, and the tangential pressure is related to the density by a linear equation of state.

Effect on the Center of Pressure of Vision, Floor Condition, and the Height of Center of Mass During Quiet Standing

open access: yesPhysical Therapy Korea, 2021
Background: Theoretically, balance is affected by the height of center of mass (COM) during quiet standing. However, no one examined this in humans with variables derived from the center of pressure (COP). Objects: We have conducted balance experiment

Oscillatory mechanoluminescence of Mn2+-doped SrZnOS in dynamic response to rapid compression

open access: yesNature Communications
Photon emission may be continuously produced from mechanical work through self-recoverable mechanoluminescence (ML). Significant progress has been made in high-performance ML materials in the past decades, but the rate-dependent ML kinetics remains ...

Temperature-induced amorphization in CaCO3 at high pressure and implications for recycled CaCO3 in subduction zones

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Subduction of oceanic crust introduces huge amounts of carbonates into Earth’s mantle, contributing to the global carbon cycle. Here, based on high-pressure-temperature experiments, the authors present a reversible temperature-induced transition from ...

Greatly enhanced mechanical properties of thermoelectric SnSe through microstructure engineering

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Ceramics, 2023
The outstanding thermoelectric material, SnSe, is also known for its inferior mechanical properties, which bring great inconvenience for its application in thermoelectric devices.

FootTile: a Rugged Foot Sensor for Force and Center of Pressure Sensing in Soft Terrain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In this paper we present FootTile, a foot sensor for reaction force and center of pressure sensing in challenging terrain. We compare our sensor design to standard biomechanical devices, force plates and pressure plates. We show that FootTile can accurately estimate force and pressure distribution during legged locomotion.

Two-way tuning of structural order in metallic glasses

open access: yesNature Communications, 2020
While metallic glasses are expected to have tunable structures, these have rarely been demonstrated. Here, the authors combine temperature and pressure to show a two-way structural tuning in rare earth-based metallic glasses beyond the nearest-neighbor ...

Correlation Inequalities for Quantum Spin Systems with Quenched Centered Disorder [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
It is shown that random quantum spin systems with centered disorder satisfy correlation inequalities previously proved (arXiv:cond-mat/0612371) in the classical case. Consequences include monotone approach of pressure and ground state energy to the thermodynamic limit. Signs and bounds on the surface pressures for different boundary conditions are also

Methane Hydrate under High Pressure: Searching for Centering of Hydrogen Bonds [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. B 68, 172105 (2003), 2003
The structural, electronic, and spectroscopic properties of a high-pressure phase of methane hydrate (MH-III) are studied by first principles electronic structure calculations. A detailed analysis of the atomic positions suggests that {\it ionization} of hydrogen-bonded water molecules occurs around 40GPa and {\it centering} or symmetrization of ...

Effects of pressure on diffusion and vacancy formation in MgO from non-empirical free-energy integrations [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The free energies of vacancy pair formation and migration in MgO were computed via molecular dynamics using free-energy integrations and a non-empirical ionic model with no adjustable parameters. The intrinsic diffusion constant for MgO was obtained at pressures from 0 to 140 GPa and temperatures from 1000 to 5000 K.
