A Recursive Bayesian Approach To Describe Retinal Vasculature Geometry [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Demographic studies suggest that changes in the retinal vasculature geometry, especially in vessel width, are associated with the incidence or progression of eye-related or systemic diseases. To date, the main information source for width estimation from

Corresponding Supine and Prone Colon Visualization Using Eigenfunction Analysis and Fold Modeling

open access: yes, 2017
We present a method for registration and visualization of corresponding supine and prone virtual colonoscopy scans based on eigenfunction analysis and fold modeling.

Continuum Mechanics Modeling of Flexible Spring Joints in Surgical Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A new mechanical model of a tendon‐actuated helical extension spring joint in surgical robots is built using Cosserat rod theory. The model can implicitly handle the unknown contacts between adjacent coils and numerically predict spring shapes from straight to significantly bent under actuation forces.

Extraction of Airways with Probabilistic State-space Models and Bayesian Smoothing

open access: yes, 2017
Segmenting tree structures is common in several image processing applications. In medical image analysis, reliable segmentations of airways, vessels, neurons and other tree structures can enable important clinical applications. We present a framework for

Miniaturized Magnetic Tip Design for Endoluminal Vine Robot Navigation

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A magnetic tip mount is designed for a miniaturized 7 mm soft‐growing vine robot to enable wireless magnetic steering and onboard imaging, while preserving a 3 mm working channel. The internal–external ring magnets design balances magnetic attachment with low eversion pressure. Experiments demonstrate ±90° steering, 34 mm bending radius, and successful

A Wearable Brain–Computer Interface for Mitigating Car Sickness via Attention Shifting

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Car sickness poses a major challenge in vehicular travel, yet effective nonpharmacological solutions are scarce. We developed a wearable, closed‐loop mindfulness BCI that uses real‐time EEG‐based neurofeedback to shift attention away from motion‐induced discomfort. Validated in real‐car experiments involving >100$>100$ susceptible individuals, over 83%

Circle of Willis centerline graphs: A dataset and baseline algorithm

open access: yesNeuroscience Informatics
The Circle of Willis (CoW) is a critical network of brain arteries, often implicated in cerebrovascular pathologies. Voxel-level segmentation is an important first step toward automated CoW assessment, but full quantitative analysis requires centerline ...

Nonlinear tube-fitting for the analysis of anatomical and functional structures

open access: yes, 2011
We are concerned with the estimation of the exterior surface and interior summaries of tube-shaped anatomical structures. This interest is motivated by two distinct scientific goals, one dealing with the distribution of HIV microbicide in the colon and ...

Hierarchical Artificial Muscle with Nonlinear Elasticity for Antagonistic and Cyclic Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We construct hierarchical muscles by plying nylon fibers around a heating wire. The hierarchical muscle shows a J‐shaped passive curve, which shows benefit in antagonistic muscle pair and work accumulation mechanism. We also develop a computational, first‐principle model to understand the physics of both active actuation stroke and passive J‐curve ...
