Testing Foundations of Biological Scaling Theory Using Automated Measurements of Vascular Networks

open access: yes, 2015
Scientists have long sought to understand how vascular networks supply blood and oxygen to cells throughout the body. Recent work focuses on principles that constrain how vessel size changes through branching generations from the aorta to capillaries and

DeepCenterline: A Multi-task Fully Convolutional Network for Centerline Extraction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
A novel centerline extraction framework is reported which combines an end-to-end trainable multi-task fully convolutional network (FCN) with a minimal path extractor. The FCN simultaneously computes centerline distance maps and detects branch endpoints. The method generates single-pixel-wide centerlines with no spurious branches.

Erosion of granular sediments by submerged impinging jets: Particle size effects and cohesion onset

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This study investigates the erosion behavior and modeling of glass particle beds under impinging jet conditions, with a focus on particle size effects and the onset of cohesion. Ultrasonic profiling is implemented to scan and measure static crater profiles.

A simple centerline extraction approach for 2D polygons

open access: yesInformation Technology and Control, 2016
This paper describes a new two task approach for extracting the centerline from simple 2D polygons. An algorithm of the first task, which generates a set of points for future centerline, is presented. The idea of the algorithm is to use the polygon hatching by parallel lines and creating paths from its middle points in different polygon rotations.

Predicting Performance of Hall Effect Ion Source Using Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
This study introduces HallNN, a machine learning tool for predicting Hall effect ion source performance using a neural network ensemble trained on data generated from numerical simulations. HallNN provides faster and more accurate predictions than numerical methods and traditional scaling laws, making it valuable for designing and optimizing Hall ...

Microrobotic Catheterization of the Ophthalmic Artery for Targeted Treatment of Retinoblastoma

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
A microrobotic platform is presented that allows teleoperated and autonomous navigation of flow‐driven magnetic microcatheters, MagFlow, into the ophthalmic artery for superselective intra‐arterial infusion of chemotherapy to treat retinoblastoma. Extensive benchtop validations with patient‐derived biomimetic phantoms under optical and fluoroscopic ...

Focusing of Active Particles in a Converging Flow

open access: yes, 2017
We consider active particles swimming in a convergent fluid flow in a trapezoid nozzle with no-slip walls. We use mathematical modeling to analyze trajectories of these particles inside the nozzle.
