Diapausing adult female mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in overwintering sites in Estonia in 2023–2024: Species composition and variation

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, EarlyView.
First comprehensive survey of overwintering mosquitoes in Estonia, documenting 5286 female mosquitoes collected from 18 subterranean overwintering sites. The Culex pipiens/Culex torrentium group dominated overwintering assemblages, representing 96.6% of all analysed specimens. Molecular analyses revealed a higher proportion of Cx.

Metabolic pattern across energy imbalance: An exploratory metabolomics study of female body weight extremes including anorexia nervosa and athletes

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract In anorexia nervosa (AN), prolonged metabolic adaptation to severe energy deficiency can impair treatment efficacy. Similarly, low energy availability poses a recognized risk to athletes, potentially compromising health and performance. This cross‐sectional study aimed to characterize the plasma metabolic pattern of females with varying ...

Somatosensory processing in long COVID fatigue and its relations with physiological and psychological factors

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract We aimed to quantify somatosensory processing in long COVID and interactions between somatosensory processing, fatigability, fatigue, autonomic function, mood and illness beliefs. Eighty‐eight participants (44 long COVID and 44 controls) were invited to complete two testing sessions, where fatigue was induced by either a cognitive or a ...

Maternal nutrition as a key determinant of placental and developing blood–brain barrier xenobiotic protective functions

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Suboptimal maternal nutrition alters placental and developing blood–brain barrier (BBB) protective function and is associated with increased fetal brain vulnerability. In the placenta, nutritional adversity may reduce the exchange surface area and promote meta‐inflammation, compromising barrier efficiency in a model‐ and context ...

Heat Perceptions, Behaviors, and Barriers of Unhoused Individuals in Germany

open access: yesPublic Health Challenges, Volume 5, Issue 4, December 2026.
Across in‐depth interviews and a survey of 252 unhoused people in 13 German cities, many underestimated heat risks yet often experienced heat‐related fatigue, nausea, or faintness. Participants reported limited hydration and frequent eviction from cooling spots, heat‐aggravating medication whose dosage and storage were rarely adapted, and minimal sun ...
