Compact diffusers for centrifugal compressors

The smaller centrifugal compressor diameter of many advanced turbofan engines renders unattractive the use of conventional conical or channel diffusing systems to deliver low Mach number, low swirl flow to the combustor. A Centrifugal Compressor Seal

A new impeller-to-sump seal was developed for a line of hermetically sealed centrifugal compressor units. Tests, using an actual compressor unit, were made to simulate steady operating conditions. Both new seal configurations and the original seal were tested. A new seal configuration resulted in a 25:1 reduction in refrigerant leakage.

Centrifugal Compressor Surge Behaviour

The unsteady behaviour of compressor systems near the surge line and during surge was investigated. Experimental examinations were carried out using a three stage centrifugal compressor of industrial design in different types of piping systems. The results obtained were compared with different theoretical models.

Sound generation in centrifugal compressors

Abstract An experimental study is described to explore the dominant sound generation mechanisms of the spectral components governing the overall noise level of centrifugal compressors. At the design speed with supersonic flow conditions in the rotor blade channels, blade tone noise and buzz-saw noise are the main contributors.
