Significant Release of Dissolved Inorganic Nutrients From the Shallow Submarine Volcano Tagoro (Canary Islands) Based on Seven-Year Monitoring

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Tagoro, the shallow submarine volcano that erupted south of El Hierro (Canary Islands, Spain) in October 2011, has been intensely monitored for over 7 years, from the early eruptive stage to the current degassing stage characterized by moderate ...

The Seasonal Cycle of the Eastern Boundary Currents of the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 128, Issue 4, April 2023., 2023
Abstract For the first time, four dedicated hydrographic cruises—one in each season—took place in 2015 around the Canary Islands to determine the seasonality of the flows at the eastern boundary of the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre. The Canary Current (CC) is the eastern boundary current of the North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre and links the Azores ...

Water Mass Transports and Pathways in the North Brazil‐Equatorial Undercurrent Retroflection

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 127, Issue 5, May 2022., 2022
Abstract The equatorial retroflection of the North Brazil Current (NBC) into the Equatorial Undercurrent (EUC) and its posterior tropical recirculation is a major regulator for the returning limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Indeed, most surface and thermocline NBC waters retroflect at the equator all the way into the central and

Length‐weight relationship of 12 demersal fish species in the Canary Islands (Spain, CE Atlantic)

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ichthyology, Volume 38, Issue 2, Page 268-272, March 2022., 2022
Abstract Length‐weight relationships (LWR) of twelve fish species collected by fish pots (half an inch mesh size), bottom horizontal longlines (hook size 3/0) and set gillnets (80 mm mesh size) from two Marine Protected Areas in the Canary Islands were determined using individual fish records collected at least once a year during ten scientific surveys

Environmental gradients and physical barriers drive the basin‐wide spatial structuring of Mediterranean Sea and adjacent eastern Atlantic Ocean prokaryotic communities

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 66, Issue 12, Page 4077-4095, December 2021., 2021
Abstract The Mediterranean Sea is a miniature ocean divided by the Sicily Strait into two basins with a marked west to east trophic gradient and separated of the nearby eastern Atlantic Ocean by the Strait of Gibraltar. Here, we test the hypothesis that these physical and environmental barriers favor the development of specific prokaryotic assemblages,

Texture changes during chilled storage of wild and farmed blackspot seabream (Pagellus bogaraveo) fed different diets

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 9, Issue 11, Page 5971-5979, November 2021., 2021
The article examines the effect on fillet texture of a reduction of dietary lipids for farmed blackspot seabream, a promising marine fish species for farming purposes. According to the present results, it is possible an important fish oil reduction in the commercial diets used in blackspot seabream with a slight variation in texture.
