Trematode Centrocestus formosanus Infection and Distribution in Ornamental Fishes in Mexico

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the ornamental fish species affected by the metacercariae of the digenean trematode Centrocestus formosanus and its distribution in 48 fish farms in Morelos, central Mexico. The parasite was found to form various numbers of branchial cysts in 11 of the 25 species analyzed.

Human infection of Centrocestus caninus in Thailand.

Examination of fecal samples, collected after treatment with praziquantel, of the persons positive with opisthorchioid eggs residing in the northern provinces of Thailand, was carried out. Five adults Centrocestus were recovered in one sample from Doi Saket, Chiang Mai and one adult was found in another fecal sample from Wiang Pa Pao, Chiang Rai.

Mucosal mast cell (MMC) responses and worm recovery rates in rats experimentally infected with Centrocestus caninus were investigated. Metacercariae of C. caninus, procured from goldfish, Carassius auratus, were orally administered to twenty-five male rats (300 metacercariae each rat).
