Periostracum Formation in Sepia officinalis and Loligo vulgaris and Homology with Other Molluscs

open access: yesAnimals
The periostracum is the outermost shell layer and the first produced during shell formation in molluscs. This organic layer isolates the extrapallial space from the external environment and provides a scaffold for subsequent calcification. In cephalopods

Geographic Variation in Diving Behaviour and Skin Isotope Ratios of Northern Bottlenose Whales, Hyperoodon ampullatus

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
High‐resolution multi‐sensor tag data from northern bottlenose whale populations in the northeast and northwest Atlantic showed differences in resting and foraging time budgets and behaviour. Skin biopsy stable isotopes corroborated likely dietary differences. Variability between populations has far‐reaching relevance for ecology and conservation, with

Captive behaviour of cephalopods [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Cephalopods are the largest and most active invertebrates. India exports frozen cuttlefish and frozen squid to countries such as Japan, USA and the European Union.

Mechanophores for Mechano‐Imaging in Polymeric Materials

open access: yesHelvetica Chimica Acta, Volume 109, Issue 6, June 2026.
Mechanophore‐based mechanochromic systems convert mechanical forces in polymers into optical signals, enabling direct imaging of stress localization and molecular damage. This perspective highlights recent advances in mechanophore design and their use to probe local mechanics across diverse polymer matrices, and concludes by outlining opportunities for

Synaptic plasticity in cephalopods; more than just learning and memory?

open access: yes, 2013
The outstanding behavioural capacity of cephalopods is underpinned by a highly sophisticated nervous system anatomy and neural mechanisms that often differ significantly from similarly complex systems in vertebrates and insects.

Spatiotemporal distribution patterns of cephalopods and their responses to changes in the marine environment in the coastal waters of Zhejiang, China

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
IntroductionLike pelagic fishes, cephalopods represent fishery resources with high worldwide potential and an important evolutionary node animal group. Thus, exploring the spatial and seasonal variations in cephalopod distribution and their associations ...

ParaHox Genes Revisited: From Gut Patterning to Integrated Axial and Neural Organization in Rotifera

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, Volume 346, Issue 4, Page 357-369, June 2026.
In rotifers, ParaHox genes show a dispersed genomic organization, with Xlox absent across gnathiferans. Exclusive neuronal expression of Gsx and Cdx reveals that ancestral ParaHox genes coordinated neural and epithelial development beyond gut patterning, suggesting an integrated role in early bilaterian body plan organization.
