World Squid Fisheries [PDF]

open access: yesReviews in Fisheries Science and Aquaculture, 2015
Some 290 species of squids comprise the order Teuthida that belongs to the molluscan Class Cephalopoda. Of these, about 30-40 squid species have substantial commercial importance around the world. Squid fisheries make a rather small contribution to world landings from capture fisheries relative to that of fish, but the proportion has increased steadily

THE RHODOPSIN SYSTEM OF THE SQUID [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Physiology, 1958
Squid rhodopsin (λmax 493 mµ)—like vertebrate rhodopsins—contains a retinene chromophore linked to a protein, opsin. Light transforms rhodopsin to lumi- and metarhodopsin. However, whereas vertebrate metarhodopsin at physiological temperatures decomposes into retinene and opsin, squid metarhodopsin is stable.

Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals Exposure from the Consumption of Cephalopods and Crustaceans in Peninsular Malaysia [PDF]

open access: yesToxics
Cephalopods and crustaceans are known to bioaccumulate heavy metals, potentially posing both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks to consumers.

The evolution of predator avoidance in cephalopods: A case of brain over brawn?

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Predation is a major evolutionary driver of animal adaptation. However, understanding of anti-predator evolution is biased toward vertebrate taxa.

Squids of the North: Gastronomy and gastrophysics of Danish squid [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Gastronomy and Food Science, 2018
Abstract Several species of cephalopods, particularly squid, are present in Danish waters, but neither are they fished commercially nor are they part of the Danes’ traditional diet. However, if Danes can eat octopus, squid, and cuttlefish when visiting Southern Europe why do they hesitate to eat Danish cephalopods at home?

High Levels of Cyclic Diguanylate Interfere with Beneficial Bacterial Colonization

open access: yesmBio, 2022
During colonization of the Hawaiian bobtail squid (Euprymna scolopes), Vibrio fischeri bacteria undergo a lifestyle transition from a planktonic motile state in the environment to a biofilm state in host mucus.

Squid express conserved ADAR orthologs that possess novel features

open access: yesFrontiers in Genome Editing, 2023
The coleoid cephalopods display unusually extensive mRNA recoding by adenosine deamination, yet the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Because the adenosine deaminases that act on RNA (ADAR) enzymes catalyze this form of RNA editing, the ...

Reservoirs of Red-Spotted Grouper Nervous Necrosis Virus (RGNNV) in Squid and Shrimp Species of Northern Alboran Sea

open access: yesViruses, 2022
The production of the aquaculture industry has increased to be equal to that of the world fisheries in recent years. However, aquaculture production faces threats such as infectious diseases.

Global squid contamination by halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and its trade induced risk transfer

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2023
Squid is traded globally as an important food resource. However, the occurrence of carcinogenic halogenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (HPAHs) in squid and the risk of their transfer through trade is little understood or recognized.

Smart SQUIDs based on relaxation oscillation SQUIDs [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Appiled Superconductivity, 1999
Smart SQUIDs based on double Relaxation Oscillation SQUIDs (DROS) and a superconducting up-down counter have been developed. DROS and counter form a flux locked loop on one single chip. The DROS output consists of a series of pulses that controls the two up and down write gates of the counter.
