Cepheids As Distance Indicators
Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1987This review attempts to summarize the various ways of determining Cepheid reddenings and luminosities and the zero points of the Cepheid period-luminosity and period-luminosity-color relations. The methods of determining luminosities that are discussed involve Cepheid parallaxes, Cepheid proper motions and radial velocities, Cepheids in clusters and ...

Developments concerning the period-luminosity (PL) relation for classical Cepheids are discussed with particular emphasis on the fact that Cepheids continue to provide the most homogeneous and reliable set of distances to many nearby galaxies. Observational programs relating to extragalactic Cepheids are also reviewed, and new distances and reddenings ...

Tuning the Cepheid distance scale
Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1992Ongoing observational programs (both from the ground and space) will provide a significantly larger sample of galaxies with well-studied Cepheids both within the Local Group and in more distant galaxies. Recent efforts in the calibration of the Cepheid distance scale utilizing Cepheids in star clusters in the Galaxy and in the Magellanic Clouds are ...

Distances and Radii of Classical Cepheids
Highlights of Astronomy, 1980Suppose one of the current high angular resolution instruments were capable of measuring the instantaneous angular diameter of a Cepheid throughout its pulsation cycle. By comparing the angular diameter variation to the linear displacement variation, obtained from the integrated radial velocity curve, one could determine both the linear radius and the ...

Cepheid distance to the virgo cluster
Pramana, 1999HST data on Cepheid variables in one Virgo Cluster spiral galaxy is re-analyzed, taking into account flux-limited incompleteness in the sample and calibration of the period-luminosity relation in the relevant period range. Distance to the Virgo Cluster is estimated to be 19.6 ± 1.7 (random) ± 2.6 (systematic) Mpc.

Distance Determination with Cepheid Variables
1999Cepheid variables have long formed the backbone of the extra-galactic distance scale. The HST has greatly increased the range of Cepheid studies, making many more galaxies available for calibrating secondary distance indicators. This makes the calibration of the Cepheid period-luminosity relations, and investigations of systematic uncertainties, of ...

Reddening free distance determination via Cepheid variables
Planetary and Space Science, 1995Abstract A long-term project initiated four years ago with the aim of establishing a consistent set of distances founded on ground-based photometry of Cepheid variables in the nearest late-type galaxies in the Local Group, or just beyond it is reported on.
