Mangabey (Cercocebus albigena)

Data are presented on the feeding behavior and activities of mangabeys (Cercocebus albigena) in the Ngogo study area, Kibale Forest, Uganda. Mangabeys spend 47% of activity observations feeding, 27% moving, and the remainder of the activity observations is accounted for by grooming, playing, vocalizing, copulating, etc. Feeding on fruit constitutes 58%

Affiliative behavior of adult female sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys)

AbstractA 14‐month study of 30 adult female members of a captive group of sooty mangabeys investigated their affiliative interactions with group members of varying age and sex. The adult females preferentially affiliated with other adults and interacted less than expected with immature group members.

Grooming with a stone in sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys)

Abstract“Stone‐grooming,” or grooming with a stone, has been reported in Macaca fuscata. This report provides a descriptive account of a similar behavior displayed by a female mangabey Cercocebus atys. During a study of embracing behavior in sooty mangabeys, one adult female was observed to groom her infant with a stone.

Sooty mangabeys (Cercocebus atys) are native to West Africa and are a natural host of SIV, which is implicated in the origin of HIV2. They have been used in studies of AIDS pathogenesis, leprosy, immune responses, reproductive biology, and behavior. Spontaneous tumors have rarely been reported in this species.
