Alzheimer's disease-like neuropathology in three species of oceanic dolphin. [PDF]

open access: yesEur J Neurosci, 2023
Vacher et al used immunohistochemistry to look for Alzheimer's‐like pathology in the brains of aged long‐finned pilot whales, white‐beaked dolphins, Risso's dolphins, harbour porpoises and a bottle‐nosed dolphin that were found beached on the shores of Scotland. All aged animals had amyloid plaque pathology, and three species exhibited both plaques and

Autophagy Activators Normalize Aberrant Tau Proteostasis and Rescue Synapses in Human Familial Alzheimer's Disease iPSC-Derived Cortical Organoids. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
A new cerebrocortical organoid model using isogenic hiPSCs with familial Alzheimer's mutations recapitulates key AD features, including amyloid‐beta and phospho‐Tau aggregation, neuronal hyperexcitability, and synapse loss. Single‐cell RNA‐seq reveals aberrant pathways in excitatory and inhibitory neurons.

Suspected Case of Persistent Thiamin Deficiency in a Hand-Reared Caribou Calf. [PDF]

open access: yesZoo Biol
A hand‐reared caribou calf experienced a suspected thiamine deficiency for > 3 months. Clinical signs of disease were largely neurological and temporarily relieved with thiamin injections, but did not fully resolve until a rumen transfaunation was performed. ABSTRACT Hand‐reared animals are invaluable and irreplaceable in studies of wildlife nutrition.

Survival to discharge and outcome of a dog following out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest due to asphyxiation

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 11, Issue 4, December 2023., 2023
Abstract A 7‐month‐old dog presented with a 10‐minute history of upper respiratory tract obstruction and secondary loss of consciousness in the minute before its arrival to the hospital. The dog was found to be dead on arrival. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated, which led to successful return of spontaneous circulation 20 minutes later, with ...

Naturally occurring histological findings and Alzheimer's‐like pathology in the brain of aging African green monkeys (Chlorocebus sabaeus)

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 531, Issue 13, Page 1276-1298, September 2023., 2023
Understanding the age‐associated incidence of natural CNS pathology in an animal model is critical to assess the safety of potential treatments for neurodegenerative disorders. We describe background and age‐related neuropathology in the St. Kitts African green monkey, a recognized translational model for neurodegenerative research, additionally ...

Sepsis and survival in critically ill calves: Risk factors and antimicrobial use

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 37, Issue 1, Page 374-389, January/February 2023., 2023
Abstract Background Sepsis is a life‐threatening disease for which critically important antimicrobials (CIA) frequently are used. Diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for sepsis and critically ill calves are largely lacking. Objectives Identify factors associated with mortality in critically ill calves and describe bacteria obtained from blood ...

Catheter‐associated air embolism of the brain in a hospitalised horse

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 10, Issue 4, December 2022., 2022
Abstract An 8‐year‐old, approximately 590 kg Belgian draft cross gelding was anaesthetised for tenoscopy and repair of a tendon sheath laceration. The horse remained hospitalised for several days. During post‐operative hospitalisation, the jugular catheter accidentally became disconnected from the extension set.

Pathological changes within the cerebral vasculature in Alzheimer’s disease: New perspectives

open access: yesBrain Pathology, Volume 32, Issue 6, November 2022., 2022
Structural and functional changes to blood vessels not only underpin disease pathogenesis in vascular dementia but are also major contributors to cognitive decline and disease progression in Alzheimer’s disease. We provide an updated review on the clinical and neuropathological vascular features (SVD, CAA) and underpinning functional changes to blood ...

Clinical characteristics, magnetic resonance imaging features, treatment, and outcome for presumed intracranial coccidioidomycosis in 45 dogs (2009‐2019)

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 35, Issue 5, Page 2222-2231, September/October 2021., 2021
Abstract Background Knowledge of the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of intracranial Coccidioides infection in dogs is essential for prompt diagnosis to limit disease‐associated morbidity and death. Objectives To describe the MRI appearance of intracranial coccidioidomycosis in dogs, identify associated clinical and ...

Myxedema Coma and Acute Hepatopathy in a Dog with Severe Atherosclerosis

open access: yesCase Reports in Veterinary Medicine, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
A 9‐year‐old male intact mixed‐breed dog was presented to The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center for evaluation of two days’ duration of weakness, lethargy, inappetence, and one episode of vomiting the day of presentation. On presentation, the dog was depressed and tetraparetic. He was noted to be icteric and dehydrated.
