Pulsatile Viscous Flows in Elliptical Vessels and Annuli: Solution to the Inverse Problem, with Application to Blood and Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
We consider the fully-developed flow of an incompressible Newtonian fluid in a cylindrical vessel with elliptical cross-section (both an ellipse and the annulus between two confocal ellipses). In particular, we address an inverse problem, namely to compute the velocity field associated with a given, time-periodic flow rate.

Comparison of methods for the quantification of albumin in serum and cerebrospinal fluid

open access: yesRevista Cubana de Investigaciones Biomédicas, 2020
Introduction: Albumin is the protein that marks the passage of cerebrospinal fluid proteins into the serum. Objective:  Determinate if the modified ELISA method is better than the bromocresol green method for serum in terms of specificity and sensitivity

Machine Learning Classification of Alzheimer's Disease Stages Using Cerebrospinal Fluid Biomarkers Alone [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
Early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease is a challenge because the existing methodologies do not identify the patients in their preclinical stage, which can last up to a decade prior to the onset of clinical symptoms. Several research studies demonstrate the potential of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, amyloid beta 1-42, T-tau, and P-tau, in early ...

Isointense infant brain MRI segmentation with a dilated convolutional neural network [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Quantitative analysis of brain MRI at the age of 6 months is difficult because of the limited contrast between white matter and gray matter. In this study, we use a dilated triplanar convolutional neural network in combination with a non-dilated 3D convolutional neural network for the segmentation of white matter, gray matter and cerebrospinal fluid in

Linked CSF reduction of phosphorylated tau and IL-8 in HIV associated neurocognitive disorder. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) is a common condition in both developed and developing nations, but its cause is largely unknown. Previous research has inconsistently linked Alzheimer's disease (AD), viral burden, and inflammation to the ...

Mathematical pressure volume models of the cerebrospinal fluid [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 1996
Numerous mathematical models have emerged in the medical literature over the past two decades attempting to characterize the pressure and volume dynamics the central nervous system compartment. These models have been used to study he behavior of this compartment under such pathological clinical conditions s hydrocephalus, head injury and brain edema ...

Generative adversarial network for segmentation of motion affected neonatal brain MRI [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Automatic neonatal brain tissue segmentation in preterm born infants is a prerequisite for evaluation of brain development. However, automatic segmentation is often hampered by motion artifacts caused by infant head movements during image acquisition.
