The role of roadsides in conserving Cerrado plant diversity
Biodiversity and Conservation, 2014The structure of Cerrado vegetation (sensu stricto) along roadsides was compared with that of protected areas (reserves). The superior stratum of reserves had 2.7 times more individuals and 1.4 times more species than on roadsides, while in the intermediate stratum there were 1.7 times more individuals and 25 % more species in reserves.

Leaf structure of the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) woody plants
Trees, 2008With the aim of recognizing the commonest leaf pattern found in the woody flora of the cerrado (the Brazilian savanna) we analyzed the leaf anatomy of 30 representative species. The leaves are mostly dorsiventral and hypostomatic and covered by trichomes and a thick layer of wax and cuticle; the vascular bundles are surrounded by a sheath of fibers ...

Ecophysiological leaf traits of Cerrado woody plants
2010The Cerrado is a biodiversity hotspot undergoing land conversion with need of broad-extent quantification of species and associated ecosystem function. The effects of species on ecosystems can be tested when functional traits are related to ecosystem properties.

Precipitation gradients, plant biogeography, and the incidence of drip‐tips in Cerrado plant species
Biotropica, 2020AbstractExamining how both climate and species distribution patterns correlate with leaf morphology can give insights into the ecological and evolutionary patterns that drive adaptive selection of leaf form and function. Drip‐tips are a common feature of leaves in rain forest tree species; they are thought to be an adaptation that aids leaf drying and ...

Defense syndromes against herbivory in a cerrado plant community
Plant Ecology, 2010Plants have traits against herbivory that may occur together and increase defense efficiency. We tested whether there are defense syndromes in a cerrado community and, if so, whether there is a phylogenetic signal in them. We measured nine defense traits from a woodland cerrado community in southeastern Brazil.
