Cervical Dystonia: Anterocollis [PDF]

open access: possible, 2012
Anterocollis usually accompanies other forms of cervical dystonia such as rotational torticollis or laterocollis but may occur in isolation. Pure anterocollis sometimes occurs as a dystonic manifestation of multiple system atrophy. Anterocollis must be differentiated from “dropped head syndrome” in which a myopathy of the paraspinal extensor muscles is

Effectiveness of Acupuncture in Cervical Dystonia

Acupuncture in Medicine, 2010
This case describes the successful addition of acupuncture to treat a patient with cervical dystonia previously managed with Botox (botulinum toxin) injections. This resulted in reduced pain and muscle spasm relief and to the authors’ knowledge is the first case to be reported using this treatment combination.

Brain connectivity abnormalities and treatment‐induced restorations in patients with cervical dystonia

European Journal of Neurology, 2020
The relationship between brain abnormalities and phenotypic characteristics in cervical dystonia (CD) patients has not been fully established, and little is known about the neuroplastic changes induced by botulinum toxin type A (BoNT‐A) treatment.

Riluzole therapy in cervical dystonia

Movement Disorders, 2002
AbstractWe conducted a 6‐week open‐label pilot study with blinded video rating of riluzole (50 mg twice a day) in six patients with cervical dystonia (CD) refractory to botulinum toxin A and oral pharmacological treatment. The Tsui rating scale served as primary efficacy measure and improved significantly under riluzole (P = 0.002).

Delays to the diagnosis of cervical dystonia

Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2016
The diagnosis of cervical dystonia (CD) is based on physical examination and is therefore reliant on clinician experience. Due to variability of presenting symptoms it may be misdiagnosed, thus delaying the provision of effective treatment. We sought to determine the average time taken to make a diagnosis of CD in our clinical cohort and explore ...

Working capacity and cervical dystonia

Parkinsonism & Related Disorders, 2010
The objective of this questionnaire study was to assess the effect of cervical dystonia on patients' working capacity. Of the 303 working-aged members of the Finnish Dystonia Association (N = 433) who participated in the study 247 (82%) had cervical dystonia. Their median age was 50 years, the median duration of CD symptoms was 12.3 years.

Subthalamic stimulation for cervical dystonia

Acta Neurochirurgica, 2020
The globus pallidus internus (GPi) has been the primary target for deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat severe medication-refractory dystonia. Some patients with primary cervical dystonia do not respond adequately to GPi stimulation. Subthalamic nucleus (STN) DBS may provide an alternative choice for treating this dystonia.

Cervical Dystonia: Retrocollis

2012
Retrocollis often occurs as a partial component of cervical dystonia and much less commonly as an isolated manifestation. It may produce either a tonic sustained retrocollic posture or may cause recurrent clonic vertical head jerks. When part of a complex dystonia, it is more commonly associated with laterocollis than other postural abnormalities ...
