Finding the right fit: Comparative cetacean distribution models using multiple data sources and statistical approaches

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions: A journal of biological invasions and biodiversity, 2018
Accurate predictions of cetacean distributions are essential to their conservation but are limited by statistical challenges and a paucity of data. This study aimed at comparing the capacity of various statistical algorithms to deal with biases commonly ...

Prioritizing future evidence needs for marine and freshwater mammal conservation action

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
To improve conservation practice, decisions should be informed by the available evidence on the effectiveness of conservation actions. Here, we review the comprehensiveness of this evidence base for marine and freshwater mammals. We assess the taxonomic and geographic coverage of the evidence base, identify biases and suggest priorities for future ...

Challenges of Monitoring Endangered Bryde's Whales During a Period of Rapid Environmental Change

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Estimating population size is challenging for rare and elusive species that occur at low densities and are difficult to detect during sampling. We estimated the abundance of a Nationally critical whale species—Aotearoa New Zealand Bryde's whales—using a custom‐formulated POPAN model which incorporated transience to account for their complex residency ...

Cetacean Skull Telescoping Brings Evolution of Cranial Sutures into Focus

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, 2019
Many modifications to the mammalian bauplan associated with the obligate aquatic lives of cetaceans—fusiform bodies, flukes, flippers, and blowholes—are evident at a glance.

Emergence, spread, and impact of high‐pathogenicity avian influenza H5 in wild birds and mammals of South America and Antarctica

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The currently circulating high‐pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) virus of the subtype H5 causes variable illness and death in wild and domestic birds and mammals, as well as in humans. This virus evolved from the Goose/Guangdong lineage of the HPAI H5 virus, which emerged in commercial poultry in China in 1996, spilled over into wild birds,

Guiana Dolphin Unusual Mortality Event and Link to Cetacean Morbillivirus, Brazil

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2018
During November–December 2017, a mass die-off of Guiana dolphins (Sotalia guianensis) began in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Molecular and pathologic investigations on 20 animals indicated that cetacean morbillivirus played a major role.

Spatial conservation priorities for marine megafaunal predators: Multi‐taxon versus taxon‐specific approaches

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Conservation for marine megafaunal predators needs to improve as they are key for ecosystem functioning. We show that different marine predator taxonomic groups have heterogeneous distributions resulting in different spatial conservation priority areas. Current Mediterranean MPAs are failing to sufficiently cover their distributions.

Controlled Ghost Fishing: Effects of Soaking Times and Mesh Sizes on Catchability in Trammel Net Fisheries

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Trammel nets are used with extended soaking times to increase the catching efficiency for demersal fish in commercial fishing. Long soaking time causes deterioration or damage to species caught in the first days. Effects of soaking time were investigated with 36‐mm, 42‐mm, and 46‐mm mesh sizes soaked over 1, 3, 5, and 7 days on target, non ...

Cetacean Stranding Response Program and Spatial–Temporal Analysis in Taiwan, 1994–2018

open access: yesAnimals
A national cetacean stranding response program in Taiwan has evolved significantly in the past three decades. Initially co-ordinated by National Taiwan University from 1994, the program transitioned to the Taiwan Cetacean Society in 1999, and local ...
