Cetylpyridinium chloride suppresses gene expression associated with halitosis

Mouthrinses containing cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) have been used as oral hygiene aids to suppress oral malodor. Although the clinical efficacy of these mouthrinses has been well-documented, the mechanism whereby CPC reduces malodor is less-well-understood.

Some possible sequential titrations of anions vs. cetylpyridinium chloride were examined. Up to four separate endpoint breaks for four groups of anions were obtained.

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1984The effects of alcohol and cetylpyridinium chloride on normal and abraded hamster buccal pouches were studied in 23 study and 23 control animals over 21 consecutive days. No significant differences were found between the control and study animals, both groups having normal cheek pouch mucosa at the end of the study period.

Concentrations of cetylpyridinium chloride from 0.21 mM to 2 mM were used for either 1 or 2 minute exposure times on the in vitro and in vivo cornea for the electrophysiology studies.
