Ocean Waves in the South Pacific: Complementarity of SWIM and SAR Observations

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 9, Issue 6, June 2022., 2022
Abstract This study focuses on ocean waves impacting the Moorea Island in French Polynesia, where coral reefs play an essential role in the biodiversity and protection of habitations. We investigate how the innovative Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring (SWIM) instrument of the Chinese‐French Oceanography SATellite satellite enables to document ...

SAR Altimetry Data as a New Source for Swell Monitoring

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 49, Issue 7, 16 April 2022., 2022
Abstract This article shows the first spectral analysis of fully‐focused Synthetic Aperture Radar (FFSAR) altimetry data with the objective of studying backscatter modulations caused by swells. Swell waves distort the backscatter in altimetry radargrams by means of velocity and range bunching.

Ocean Surface Wind Speed Dependence and Retrieval From Off‐Nadir CFOSAT SWIM Data

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, 2021
In this study, we analyzed the ocean surface wind speed dependence of off‐nadir data from the Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring (SWIM) aboard the Chinese‐French Oceanography Satellite (CFOSAT).

Evaluation of Assimilation in the MASNUM Wave Model Based on Jason-3 and CFOSAT

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
Accurate numerical simulation of ocean waves is one of the most important measures to ensure shipping safety, offshore engineering construction, etc. The use of wave observations from satellite is an efficient way to correct model results.

In-Situ Validation of Altimetry and CFOSAT SWIM Measurements in a High Wave Environment

open access: yesJournal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology, 2023
While satellite altimeters have revolutionized ocean science, validation measurements in high wave environments are rare. Using geodetic Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data collected from the Southern Ocean Flux Station (SOFS, −47°S, 142°E ...

CAL/VAL Phase for the Swim Instrument Onboard cFOSAT [PDF]

open access: yesIGARSS 2020 - 2020 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2020
The Chinese-French oceanography satellite, CFOSAT, was launched on October 2018. Two Ku-band scatterometers are on-board: SCAT for the wind observation and SWIM for the wave observation. This paper presents the most recent results on the SWIM data quality analysis a few months after the end of the CAL/VAL phase.

The Wide Swath Significant Wave Height: An Innovative Reconstruction of Significant Wave Heights From CFOSAT’s SWIM and Scatterometer Using Deep Learning

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2021
The accuracy of a wave model can be improved by assimilating an adequate number of remotely sensed wave heights. The Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring (SWIM) and Scatterometer (SCAT) instruments onboard China‐France Oceanic SATellite provide ...

Modelling swell propagation across the Pacific

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Ocean wave swell generated in the vicinity of Campbell Island in the Southern Ocean is tracked along Great Circle paths across the Pacific Ocean. Data from a wave buoy at Campbell Island provides data on the directional spectrum in the generation region.

Sea ice recognition for CFOSAT SWIM at multiple small incidence angles in the Arctic

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2022
Sea ice recognition is one of the main tasks for sea ice monitoring in the Arctic and is also applied for the detection of other ocean phenomena. The Surface Wave Investigation and Monitoring (SWIM) instrument, as an innovative remote sensor that ...
