Narrow Margins: Aerobic Performance and Temperature Tolerance of Coral Reef Fishes Facing Extreme Thermal Variability. [PDF]

open access: yesGlob Chang Biol
Over long timeframes, animals may adapt or acclimate to their environment. By comparing fishes from ‘typical’ and thermally extreme coral reef habitats, we find limited differences in their metabolic physiology and show that those from the extreme environment are living closer to their maximum temperature.

Rapid diversification of grey mangroves (Avicennia marina) driven by geographic isolation and extreme environmental conditions in the Arabian Peninsula [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 4, February 2024., 2023
Abstract Biological systems occurring in ecologically heterogeneous and spatially discontinuous habitats provide an ideal opportunity to investigate the relative roles of neutral and selective factors in driving lineage diversification. The grey mangroves (Avicennia marina) of Arabia occur at the northern edge of the species' range and are subject to ...

On the Role of Sea Surface Temperature in the 16 April 2024 Rainstorm Over the United Arab Emirates

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 3, 16 February 2026.
Abstract This study examines how anomalously high sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the Arabian Sea and surrounding gulfs contributed to the record‐breaking rainfall (250 mm day−1 ${\text{day}}^{-1}$) over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on 16 April 2024, with the greatest impacts in Dubai, Al‐Ain, and Abu Dhabi.

Acceleration of Warming, Deoxygenation, and Acidification in the Arabian Gulf Driven by Weakening of Summer Winds

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 51, Issue 24, 28 December 2024.
Abstract The Arabian Gulf (AG) exports hypersaline, dense waters into the Sea of Oman (SOO), replaced by fresher inflowing surface waters from the Indian Ocean. We investigate the impact of recent AG warming on its exchange with the SOO and the implications this has on the AG biogeochemistry.
