Role of extracellular carbonic anhydrase in the polar diatom Fragilariopsis cylindrus

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Diatoms are major primary producers in productive polar oceans, where cold temperatures and high CO2 solubility raise questions as to whether they rely on the CO2‐concentrating mechanism (CCM) to saturate photosynthesis. Knowledge of CCM function will help better predict the sensitivity of diatom primary production to warming and acidifying ...

Photoacclimation of the polar diatom Chaetoceros neogracilis at low temperature

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2022
Polar microalgae face two major challenges: 1- growing at temperatures (-1.7 to 5°C) that limit enzyme kinetics; and 2- surviving and exploiting a wide range of irradiance. The objective of this study is to understand the adaptation of an Arctic diatom to its environment by studying its ability to acclimate to changes in light and temperature.

Effect of 4 microalgal diets on the proximal composition, chlorophyll concentration, and total carotenoid content in Artemia franciscana

open access: yesCiencias Marinas, 2023
Microalgae are the primary source of food for Artemia franciscana. In turn, Artemia serve as live food for various species in culture. The chemical composition of Artemia is of great importance because it affects the nutritional quality of the organisms ...

Exploring Global Patterns of Trace Metal Limitation as a Regulator of the Distribution of Dominant Marine Phytoplankton Groups

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 2, June 2026.
By synthesizing decades of culture data with modern oceanographic datasets, we modelled trace metal limitation of phytoplankton. Our analysis reaffirms the critical role of iron but additionally highlights a significant, growing impact of zinc on the biological pump in future oceans.

Reversible Regime Change: Climate‐Driven Phytoplankton Community Shifts in the Cariaco Basin, Venezuela

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 131, Issue 6, June 2026.
Abstract Phytoplankton communities are integral to oceanic biogeochemical cycles and are sensitive indicators of climate‐driven environmental variability. Long‐term time series capture this variability, allowing us to unravel the effects of environmental change on local communities.
