Using a Low‐Cost Trackball System to Assess Repeatability of Movement in Small Animals

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
We describe a low‐cost trackball with automated movement capture for use in behavioural ecology. Repeated testing of ground beetles Carabus problematicus showed consistent behavioural differences between individuals in movement parameters. Trackballs offer novel insights into behavioural ecology, including consistent animal personality differences ...

Immune‐Related Protein and Non‐Coding RNA Cargo of Extracellular Vesicles Participate in the Chronic Inflammation Induced by HIV Infection

open access: yesJournal of Extracellular Biology, Volume 4, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Extracellular vesicles (EVs) promote intercellular communication, playing a key role in the secondary immune‐related pathologies driven by chronic inflammation in people living with HIV (PLWH). To identify molecular components within large EVs (lEVs) from PLWH's plasma that may influence immune function and contribute to the pathological ...

Resilience and Brain Changes in Long‐Term Ayahuasca Users: Insights From Psychometric and fMRI Pattern Recognition

open access: yesJournal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Volume 62, Issue 6, Page 1782-1790, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Ayahuasca is an Amazonian psychedelic brew that contains dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and beta carbolines. Prolonged use has shown changes in cognitive‐behavioral tasks, and in humans, there is evidence of changes in cortical thickness and an increase in neuroplasticity factors that could lead to modifications in functional neural ...

Phylogeny, Synteny, and Distribution of Type III Secretion Systems in Burkholderia cenocepacia: A Closer Look Into Host Span

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 14, Issue 6, December 2025.
T3SS is a dedicated machinery that mediates interactions between bacteria and eukaryotic cells, providing a functional interface in pathogenic or symbiotic associations. Phylogenetic analyses and T3SS‐gene synteny revealed nine gene clusters, with no needle protein gene (sctF). However, an orphan CDS encoding a putative SctF was found.

Trypanosoma cruzi P21 Is a Pleiotropic Protein That Is Involved in Parasite Host Cell Invasion and Intracellular Parasitism

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 14, Issue 6, December 2025.
This study reveals the pleiotropic role of Trypanosoma cruzi P21 protein in the low‐virulence G strain. P21 knockout significantly impairs parasite invasion, intracellular multiplication, and egress in vitro. In vivo, P21 deficiency leads to reduced cardiac tissue parasitism, suggesting its role in establishing and maintaining silent infections.

Could Cultured Meat Be a Sustainable and Safe Source of Protein?

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, Volume 69, Issue 24, December 2025.
Cultured meat could be a sustainable alternative to traditional beef, providing potential benefits for both human health and environmental preservation. ABSTRACT Red and processed meat includes high‐quality proteins and essential sources of micronutrients, such as iron, zinc, and vitamin B12; however, high consumption is linked to an increased risk of ...

Environmental isolation of Sporothrix spp. in veterinary settings

open access: yesVeterinary Record Open, Volume 12, Issue 2, December 2025.
Abstract Background This study investigated environmental contamination by Sporothrix spp. in a veterinary facility specialised in treating cats with sporotrichosis. Methods Twelve samples were collected from frequently touched surfaces and cages of three cats at different treatment stages. Sampling sites included a procedure table, door handle, faucet,

Effect of Crosslinking on the Physical Properties and Antifungal Activity of Active Coatings Containing Cinnamon Essential Oil for Anthracnose Control in Mangoes

open access: yesJournal of Food Science, Volume 90, Issue 12, December 2025.
ABSTRACT This study aimed to verify the stability of cinnamon essential oil (CEO) nanoemulsions after their incorporation into polymer‐based coatings for the control of anthracnose in mangoes. A 0.75% CEO emulsion with Tween 80 was produced via ultrasonication and incorporated into sodium alginate (1%) and carboxymethylcellulose (0.5%) solutions, with ...
