A chance for ontology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This paper speaks to Hook’s thesis that a National Māori University needs to be established. However, it sets about this task by designating Hook’s intended central concerns to the outer reaches of his article’s limits, and moving towards the core those ...

miRNA‐29 regulates epidermal and mesenchymal functions in skin repair

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
miRNA‐29 inhibits cell‐to‐cell and cell‐to‐matrix adhesion by silencing mRNA targets. Adhesion is controlled by complex interactions between many types of molecules coded by mRNAs. This is crucial for keeping together the layers of the skin and for regenerating the skin after wounding.

Chance in the Everett interpretation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
The notion of objective probability or chance, as a physical trait of the world, has proved elusive; the identification of chances with actual frequencies does not succeed. An adequate theory of chance should explain not only the connection of chance with statistics, but with degrees of belief, and more broadly the entire phenomenology of (seemingly ...

Distributionally robust chance constrained Markov decision process with Kullback-Leibler divergence [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
This paper considers the distributionally robust chance constrained Markov decision process with random reward and ambiguous reward distribution. We consider individual and joint chance constraint cases with Kullback-Leibler divergence based ambiguity sets centered at elliptical distributions or elliptical mixture distributions, respectively. We derive

Imprecise Probability and Chance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Understanding probabilities as something other than point values (e.g., as intervals) has often been motivated by the need to find more realistic models for degree of belief, and in particular the idea that degree of belief should have an objective basis

Spot‐14 and its paralog Spot‐14R regulate expression of metabolic and thermogenic pathway genes in murine brown and beige adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Spot‐14 and Spot‐14R play distinct roles in regulating metabolism in brown and beige adipocytes. While both influence lipid and glucose pathways, Spot‐14 uniquely controls thermogenic gene expression. This dual regulation balances energy storage and heat production, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for obesity and metabolic disorders. Spot 14

Modeling goal chances in soccer: a Bayesian inference approach [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
We consider the task of determining the number of chances a soccer team creates, along with the composite nature of each chance-the players involved and the locations on the pitch of the assist and the chance. We propose an interpretable Bayesian inference approach and implement a Poisson model to capture chance occurrences, from which we infer team ...

Supercontinuum-tailoring multicolor imaging reveals spatiotemporal dynamics of heterogeneous tumor evolution

open access: yesNature Communications
Tumor heterogeneity and tumor evolution contribute to cancer treatment failure. To understand how selective pressures drive heterogeneous tumor evolution, it would be useful to image multiple important components and tumor subclones in vivo. We propose a

Darwin, Polanski and Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles: facts and metaphors

open access: yesMiranda: Revue Pluridisciplinaire du Monde Anglophone, 2010
This paper deals with Thomas Hardy’s novel Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Roman Polanski’s screen adaptation Tess; the pivotal role of Darwinian Inheritance theories is discussed in the novel and the film, with reference to major episodes such as the ...

Aggregation, Beneficence, and Chance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
It is plausible to think that it is wrong to cure many people’s headaches rather than save someone else’s life. On the other hand, it is plausible to think that it is not wrong to expose someone to a tiny risk of death when curing this person’s headache.
