We found that teleosts employed two different strategies to ensure sufficient ZP (zona pellucida) synthesis: expansion of ZPB1(a) and ZPC1(a) in basal species or liver expression of ZPB1a and ZPC1aa in advanced species. The N‐terminus of expanded ZPB1(a) or ZPC1(a) and liver‐expressed ZPB1a contains repeated units or low‐complexity regions to form ...

Free Plasma Estrogens in the Channel Catfish.
SummaryIsolation of free plasma estrogens from blood and ovaries of the Channel Catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, led to identification of 16-ketoestradiol, estriol, epiestriol, estrone, estradiol-17α and estradiol-17β. It was found that as the ovary increases in weight at 1–3 weeks before spawning, there is a gradual increase for all free plasma estrogens.

Antibody response of channel catfish after channel catfish virus infection and following dexamethasone treatment [PDF]
Channel catfish virus (CCV, Ictalurid herpesvirus 1) and CCV disease have been extensively studied. Yet, little is known about CCV-host interaction after resolution of the primary infection. In order to determine potential recrudescence of CCV from latency, we established latency by exposing channel catfish juveniles with CCV or a thymidine kinase ...

Acquiring data on rare and threatened species can be challenging, particularly in remote areas. Environmental DNA (eDNA) offers a less effort-intensive method for detecting species compared to physical fish sampling methods.

ABSTRACT To study variables that may trigger the dispersion of the currently expanding European catfish in its native distribution limits, 42 individuals were captured from Upper Lake Constance (lentic) and 42 from two streaming tributaries (lotic), fitted with pressure and temperature loggers, and released at the site of capture (control: lotic or ...

Abstract The pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus is a freshwater fish species native to North America. It has been introduced to Europe, where it is recognized as one of the worst aquatic invaders due to its high adaptability and invasive potential. This study aimed to determine the presence of L. gibbosus in small to medium‐sized water bodies, both lotic and
