Elevated Blood Hemoglobin in Different Cavefish Populations Evolves Through Diverse Hemoglobin Gene Expression Patterns

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, Volume 344, Issue 4, Page 175-181, June 2025.
Distinct populations of the cave‐dwelling fish, Astyanax mexicanus, have adapted to low oxygen through the upregulation of hemoglobin gene expression. This work demonstrates that diverse transcriptomic mechanisms have evolved for hypoxic adaptation via different hemoglobin genes.

Relationships among major lineages of characid fishes (Teleostei: Ostariophysi: Characiformes), based on molecular sequence data

open access: yesMolecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2010
The family Characidae is a group of freshwater bony fishes that exhibits high species-level diversity and whose members inhabit parts of Texas, Mexico, and Central and South America. Thus far, morphological data have been of limited use in discerning relationships among subfamilies and incertae sedis genera of the family Characidae.

Three new species of Bryconamericus (Characiformes, Characidae), with keys for species from Ecuador and a discussion on the validity of the genus Knodus [PDF]

open access: yesAnimal Biodiversity and Conservation, 2013
Three new species of characid fishes of the genus Bryconamericus are described from the Pacific coast and Amazon Basin in Ecuador, based on pigmentation and morphometric, meristic and osteological characters. B.

Phosphoglucose isomerase gene duplication in the bony fishes: an evolutionary history. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1973
Electrophoretic patterns of phosphoglucose isomerase (PGI) in bony fishes provide strong evidence for a model of genetic control by two independent structural gene loci, most likely resulting from a gene duplication.

Revisiting the History of Ornamental Aquaculture in Europe to Understand the Benefits and Drawbacks of Freshwater Fish Imports

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 2, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Ornamental aquaculture and fishkeeping are very popular with millions of enthusiasts worldwide. The number of newly imported fish species for ornamental purposes grew slowly from World War I until the 1980s. It then exponentially increased until now with more than 7900 species and a large number of scientifically undescribed morphotypes.

Mutilating predation in the Cheirodontinae Odontostilbe pequira (Characiformes: Characidae)

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
We observed individuals of Odontostilbe pequira, a small characid, approaching and biting individuals of larger-bodied fishes of other species. This observation was made in two clear water headwater streams of the Cuiabá basin, Paraguay River system ...

بررسی اثر ديازينون بر آنزيم‌های آنتی‌اکسيدان و پراکسيداسيون ليپيدهای مغز موش صحرايی [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010

River Geomorphology and Fish Diversity Around the Manseriche Gorge, the Last Andean Crossing Is in Peril

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 60, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The transition from the Andes to the Amazon lowland hosts a high biodiversity and currently is facing several anthropogenic activities, including hydropower infrastructure projects. Little is known about the geomorphology of the Andean gorges, rivers and the interaction with the fish diversity upstream and downstream of gorges.

Structural and functional evidence that a B chromosome in the characid fish Astyanax scabripinnis is an isochromosome [PDF]

open access: yesHeredity, 2000
Astyanax scabripinnis possesses a widespread polymorphism for metacentric B chromosomes as large as the largest chromosome pair in the A complement. On the basis of C-banding pattern, it was hypothesized that these B chromosomes are isochromosomes that have arisen by means of centromere misdivision and chromatid nondisjunction.
