Influence of the dietary contribution of terrestrial insects to the condition factor of bleak Alburnus alburnus in a highly polluted lowland river

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 105, Issue 5, Page 1445-1454, November 2024.
Abstract Bleak Alburnus alburnus is a highly abundant but understudied fish species, and we know little about the trophic ecology of populations inhabiting rivers in central Europe. From an ecosystem perspective, this fish species is interesting as it is known to feed on surface insects, thereby linking the terrestrial with the aquatic habitat.

Meristic co‐evolution and genomic co‐localization of lateral line scales and vertebrae in Central American cichlid fishes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2024.
We dissect the co‐evolution and genetic architecture of lateral line scale counts and vertebrae numbers in Neotropical Heroine cichlids. Our phylogenetic comparative analyses recovered a positive correlation between these two traits. Furthermore, our qualitative traits locus (QTL) analyses identified significant genomic co‐localized associations for ...

Descripción de los complejos estructurales óseos en Helcogrammoides chilensis (Blennioidei: Tripterygiidae) de la zona central de Chile [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Indexación: ScieloAbstract: This paper describes the osteological features in the context of the structural complexes they build as a way of avoiding their separation from the morphofunctional wholes to which they belong.

Quantitative impacts of hydroelectric dams on the trans‐Amazonian migrations of goliath catfish

open access: yesConservation Letters, Volume 17, Issue 5, September/October 2024.
Abstract Hydropower expansion is increasingly responsible for connectivity and biodiversity loss in freshwater ecosystems. The Amazon basin, which supports the highest level of freshwater biodiversity globally, faces such unplanned expansion. Here, we demonstrate and quantify the impacts of two major hydroelectric dams on the Madeira River on the trans‐

A checklist of chromosome numbers and karyotypes of Amazonian freshwater fishes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992

Myers' divisions revisited: Contemporary evidence for distinct trait differences among global inland fishes

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 672-685, July 2024.
‘Our global assessment showed multiple differences in salinity tolerance, morphological and life‐history traits, distributional ranges and genetic diversity among the three Myers' fish divisions (i.e. primary, secondary and peripheral fish), but also large variability and overlap among groups in some features’.

Una especie nueva del género Creagrutus Guenther del norte de Colombia Una especie nueva del género Creagrutus Guenther del norte de Colombia

open access: yesCaldasia, 1960
This paper describes a new species of characid fish, Creagrutus nigrostigmatus, which differs from all earlier known species of the genus in possessing a well-marked black horizontal caudaI bar, as well as in the spacing of the teeth on the ...

Three sympatric karyomorphs in the fish Astyanax fasciatus (Teleostei, Characidae) do not seem to hybridize in natural populations

open access: yesComparative Cytogenetics, 2012
Ninety individuals of the characid fish Astyanax fasciatus (Cuvier, 1819) were collected at Água da Madalena stream (Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil) and analyzed for diploid chromosome number 2n and karyotype composition as well as for the ...

Two new Bryconamericus: B. cinarucoense n. sp. and B. singularis n. sp. (Characiformes, Characidae) from the Cinaruco River, Orinoco Basin, with keys to all Venezuelan species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Here we describe for the first time Bryconamericus cinarucoense n. sp. and Bryconamericus singularis n. sp., two new species of Characiformesfrom the Cinaruco River, Orinoco Basin in Venezuela. B. cinarucoense n. sp.

Shared and unique patterns of embryo development in extremophile poeciliids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Background: Closely related lineages of livebearing fishes have independently adapted to two extreme environmental factors: toxic hydrogen sulphide (H2S) and perpetual darkness.
