Phylogeny of the Serrasalmidae (Characiformes) based on mitochondrial DNA sequences [PDF]

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2008
Previous studies based on DNA sequences of mitochondrial (mt) rRNA genes showed three main groups within the subfamily Serrasalminae: (1) a "pacu" clade of herbivores (Colossoma, Mylossoma, Piaractus); (2) the "Myleus" clade (Myleus, Mylesinus, Tometes, Ossubtus); and (3) the "piranha" clade (Serrasalmus, Pygocentrus, Pygopristis, Pristobrycon ...

Parasites Are Paramount: Vertical Trophic Positions of Parasitic Catfishes in a Tropical River Food Web

open access: yesEcology of Freshwater Fish, Volume 34, Issue 4, October 2025.
ABSTRACT The Neotropical catfish family Trichomycteridae contains parasitic fishes that include scale and mucus feeders (subfamily Stegophilinae) and blood feeders (i.e., ‘candirus’, subfamily Vandelliinae). The influence of parasitic catfishes on food web dynamics is unknown.

A checklist of chromosome numbers and karyotypes of Amazonian freshwater fishes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992

Early ontogeny of tetra Markiana nigripinnis (Characiformes: Characidae)

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology, 2023
Abstract The early development of Markiana nigripinnis is described by morphological characters, pigmentation, and morphometry. Larvae were obtained through semi-natural breeding, collected, fixed, and identified according to their development. Eighty individuals with standard lengths ranging from 3.1 to 24.3 mm were analyzed.

The elusive scleral cartilages: Comparative anatomy and development in teleosts and avians

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 308, Issue 7, Page 1838-1850, July 2025.
Abstract The sclera of all vertebrate eyes is comprised of connective tissue, with some organisms developing cartilage within this tissue. A review of the cartilages that have been described in the vertebrate sclera and their anatomical relationships is discussed together with their potential homology.

Illuminating the Dark: Using eDNA Metabarcoding to Study the Unique Ichthyofauna of the Furnas Formation Sinkholes

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
Using eDNA metabarcoding, we assessed fish diversity in isolated sinkholes in southern Brazil, uncovering signs of local extinction and species persistence. This approach offers a non‐invasive tool for biodiversity assessment and informs conservation efforts in unique karst environments.

Low‐Effort eDNA Sampling Reveals Fish Community Patterns in a Neotropical River Basin

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
Low eDNA sampling effort (< 10 sample sites) using a portable on‐site kit with syringe filters and a modest water volume (< 500 mL per site) provided a rapid and robust snapshot of fish biodiversity. Environmental DNA based species richness increases along the upstream‐downstream gradient showing a significant negative correlation with river elevation ...

Ictiofauna do Rio Jurubatuba, Santos, São Paulo: um refúgio de diversidade em terras impactadas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Ichthyofaunistic surveys in the Atlantic Rainforest have been published in relatively few works, in spite of the major biological importance of this once vast biome which is rapidly vanishing due to disordered human population growth and natural ...
