Associations between Serum Zinc Levels and the Presence of Distal Symmetric Polyneuropathy in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Lower serum zinc levels were independently associated with distal symmetric polyneuropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Each 1 μg/dL increase in serum zinc level was associated with a 5.4% reduction in the odds of diabetic neuropathy, suggesting a potential role of zinc deficiency in DSPN pathogenesis.
