Air quality in the Industrial Heartland of Alberta, Canada and potential impacts on human health. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The "Industrial Heartland" of Alberta is Canada's largest hydrocarbon processing center, with more than 40 major chemical, petrochemical, and oil and gas facilities. Emissions from these industries affect local air quality and human health.

Subtype‐specific enhancer RNAs define transcriptional regulators and prognosis in breast cancers

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed machine learning methodologies to perform the subtype‐specific classification of RNA‐seq data sets, which are mapped on enhancers from TCGA‐derived breast cancer patients. Their integration with gene expression (referred to as ProxCReAM eRNAs) and chromatin accessibility profiles has the potential to identify lineage‐specific and ...

Metadynamics with Discriminants: a Tool for Understanding Chemistry

open access: yes, 2018
We introduce an extension of a recently published method\cite{Mendels2018} to obtain low-dimensional collective variables for studying multiple states free energy processes in chemical reactions.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

ÍNDICES DE PODER ELECTROFÍLICO GLOBAL Y LOCAL PARA EL ESTUDIO TEÓRICO DE LA REACTIVIDAD QUÍMICA: APLICACIÓN A DERIVADOS CARBONILO α,β-INSATURADOS

open access: yesQuímica Nova
In this study two new global descriptors for chemical reactivity are proposed, namely the electrophilic power and nucleophilic power. These have been developed by performing the normalization of the local electrophilic power and local nucleophilic power ...

Quantum size effects of small, size-selected and deposited CoRh clusters on Ni

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2016
The electronic, chemical and magnetic properties of in situ prepared, mass-selected and deposited Co _x Rh _y alloy clusters with up to five atoms per cluster have been studied by means of x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism ...

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.

Targeted modulation of IGFL2‐AS1 reveals its translational potential in cervical adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cervical adenocarcinoma patients face worse outcomes than squamous cell carcinoma counterparts despite similar treatment. The identification of IGFL2‐AS1's differential expression provides a molecular basis for distinguishing these histotypes, paving the way for personalized therapies and improved survival in vulnerable populations globally.

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated
