Boosting Photo‐Pyroelectric Effect via Tunable Polarization and Interfacial Defect Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study reports Ba(Ti0.85Zr0.15)O3 nanocatalysts with enhanced polarization and oxygen‐vacancy‐rich interfaces for efficient NIR‐II photo‐pyroelectric therapy. Zr doping boosts the pyroelectric coefficient and accelerates polarization switching, while oxygen vacancies improve photothermal conversion and surface reactivity.

Photonuclear Population of 229m,gTh in Th‐Doped Crystals Toward Nuclear Clock Development

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates a novel photonuclear approach for producing the nuclear clock isomer 229mTh in thorium‐doped crystals, overcoming current supply limitations. Through cross‐section calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we identify optimal crystal materials and irradiation conditions, achieving high signal‐to‐noise ratios.

Prioritizing Feasible and Impactful Actions to Enable Secure AI Development and Use in Biology

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As artificial intelligence continues to enhance biological innovation, the potential for misuse must be addressed to fully unlock the potential societal benefits. While significant work has been done to evaluate general‐purpose AI and specialized biological design tools (BDTs) for biothreat creation risks, actionable steps to mitigate the risk

Underestimations in the In Silico-Predicted Toxicities of V-Agents

open access: yesJournal of Xenobiotics, 2023
V-agents are exceedingly toxic nerve agents. Recently, it was highlighted that V-agents constitute a diverse subclass of compounds with most of them not extensively studied. Although chemical weapons have been banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention

Taking the Law Seriously: The Imperative Need for a Nuclear Weapons Convention [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Jonathan Swift famously said, Laws are like cobwebs, which may catch small flies, but let wasps and hornets break through. Swift was no doubt referring to the propensity of the law to shrink from prosecuting the lords of the realm, while going ...

The impacts of biological invasions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Anthropocene is characterised by a continuous human‐mediated reshuffling of the distributions of species globally. Both intentional and unintentional introductions have resulted in numerous species being translocated beyond their native ranges, often leading to their establishment and subsequent spread – a process referred to as biological
